Charlestown council examines affordable housing options

CHARLESTOWN — On Monday evening, Evelyn Smith, chair of the Charlestown Affordable Housing Commission, and Geoffrey Marchant, executive director of the Washington County Community Development Corporation (WCCDC), updated the Charlestown Town Council regarding ChurchWoods and Shannock Cottages, which are proposed elderly and low-income housing construction projects.

Council seeks to revisit Chariho Act

RICHMOND – The Richmond Town Council continues to vie for the reopening of the Chariho Act for discussion and possible amendment, and plans to pursue potential legal avenues to do so. The council discussed the recent report of Charlestown’s Chariho Funding ad hoc Subcommittee at the council meeting Tuesday, which alleges that Richmond requested a single taxing district be formed for Chariho.

Town seeks to purchase Whalerock property

At the beginning of Monday’s meeting, Charleston Town Council President Thomas Gentz said that “negotiations are continuing” regarding the town’s possible purchase of the proposed Whalerock wind turbine site.

Last summer the Wickford 11-Year Old All-Stars were involved in two of the most exciting games in the District 3 Tournament regardless of age level – albeit both in losing efforts.
After running the table in the winners bracket they faced off against Chariho only one win away from winning the district.
At the time Wickford coach Ryan Gwaltney called the first game of the district finals “a rollercoaster” and it might have been an understatement in retrospect.

URI terminates lease with Paideia to construct amphitheater

KINGSTON – The University of Rhode Island recently terminated a lease agreement with the Hellenic Society Paideia to construct a Hellenic cultural center and outdoor amphitheater on the university’s Kingston campus.
On June 11, Robert A. Weygand, URI’s vice president of administration and finance, sent a letter to Ilias Tomazos, president of Paideia, advising him of the termination of the ground lease.

Food truck nights may be coming to South Kingstown

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The popular food truck nights held twice weekly in Narragansett could soon be coming to South Kingstown.
South Kingstown Town Council Vice President Carol Hagan McEntee requested at the council meeting Monday that Town Manager Stephen A. Alfred look into the feasibility of holding weekly spring and summer food truck nights at the South Kingstown Town Beach and/or Marina Park.

Doyle case continued due to lawyer change

July 10, 2013

WAKEFIELD – Daniel E. Doyle, the former director of the Institute for International Sport who is charged with embezzling more than $1 million from the Institute, has a new attorney representing him in the case.
A pretrial conference and a determination of attorney hearing were scheduled Monday in Washington County Superior Court before Judge Melanie Wilk Thunberg.
