RI may be missing out on millions in marijuana tax

October 6, 2014

A recent study by NerdWallet, an organization that provides financial advice to individuals and businesses, estimates that by taking no action on the vote to legalize marijuana in Rhode Island, the General Assembly may have missed out on more than $20 million in extra tax revenue for the state.
The number was calculated using data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration - specifically, the numbers of people over 25 who use marijuana. A formula was then used to come up with a total of $20,271,018 in potential tax revenue from the legalization.
