Schedule is tough, but Rams look tougher

November 27, 2012

Four games into the season and the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team still doesn’t have a win.
If this happened last season, people would be jumping off the roofs of the dorms on the Kingston campus and demanding the head of their coach.
This is a new era. And when Dan Hurley is calm, everyone should be calm too, even if the season hasn’t gotten off to an ideal start with losses to a strong Norfolk State team, an ACC team in Virginia Tech, the No. 4 team in the country with Ohio State and Sunday’s lost to Hurley’s alma mater, Seton Hall.

Column: Hurley brings new attitude to URI

November 27, 2012

The Dan Hurley Era didn’t get off to the best start.
Prior to the Nov. 9 game against Norfolk State at the Ryan Center, the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team’s first-year head coach either didn’t know or couldn’t remember the passcode to open the door to the locker room. He stood at the door and looked for help before wandering up and down the halls before he finally found someone who could open the door moments before he gave his first official pregame speech.

'Gansett, SK, Prout getting back on the field

November 1, 2012

It’s going to be a while before things are back to being normal in South County.
Today they get one small step closer.
There was still plenty of damage, not a lot of power and schools were still closed, but the area’s sports teams are returning to the field today after days of wondering when games would be played next.
Today three area teams play playoff games. In girls soccer, Narragansett plays at Westerly in the Division II preliminaries and Prout hosts Mount Hope in the D-I playoffs. The Narragansett girls volleyball team opens the Division II playoffs at Barrington.

Chariho taking sports schedule day by day

October 31, 2012

The games will go on at Chariho.
When is still the looming question,
Monday’s storm couldn’t have been timed worse as far as the Rhode Island Interscholastic League is concerned. The Division I volleyball regular season was supposed to conclude that night and the boys and girls soccer and field hockey playoffs were scheduled to start Tuesday.
With homes flooded, trees down, power out and schools closed, sports were put on hold with the hope they can return Thursday, especially at Chariho High School.
