KINGSTON – There wasn’t much to say after the University of Rhode Island’s 72-45 loss to Xavier Sunday night.
In any game, coaches and players go out of their way to find a silver lining, something to grasp on to, something to make it easier to forget an otherwise sour day. Last Monday, the Rams’ left knowing they were blown out on the road by a Florida team that should find its way to the NCAA Tournament, a game that looked like an aberration from how the Rams have played this season.
It has not been a good first half for the URI men's basketball team. The Rams have struggled in every aspect of the game and trail Xavier 31-19, the lowest scoring first-half of the season.

Chariho knew it'd be facing a ton of pressure from the North Kingstown girls basketball team's defense Friday night.
It didn't matter what the Chargers knew - because the Skippers executed their game plan perfectly.
Switching from a zone press to man-to-man after the Chargers were breaking their press, the Skippers forced turnover after turnover - 29 in all - in a 58-40 win over Chariho Friday night.
The game was tied at four when the Skippers made the switch, and once they did they held Chariho without a field goal for the next six minutes, 44 seconds, taking a 19-8 lead in the process.
It all happened so fast.
Down 1-0, the East Greenwich hockey team gave up three goals in a 2 minute, 44 second span early in the second period and couldn't recover in a 6-2 loss to Cumberland Friday night at West Warwick Civic Center.
After a solid first period, EG gave up a goal just 1:47 into the second period and once Cumberland's scoring train got rolling, it couldn't be stopped. The Clippers scored 25 seconds later and ended the binge with 10:29 left in the period.
WEST WARWICK — Coventry’s Zach Levesque was in middle school the last time he scored four goals in a hockey game.
Last night, it was déjà vu for the 5-foot, 6-inch senior as he scored all four goals for the Oakers in a 4-0 shutout over the Middletown Islanders.
COVENTRY — The scoreboard with 11 minutes, 33 seconds left in Friday’s game showed the improvement the Coventry girls basketball team has made since the beginning of December.
Even though the Oakers had been heavily outplayed by visiting La Salle, they were still only down six points with a chance to cut the deficit even further.
La Salle went on to run away with the Division I-South contest 53-37 thanks to their full-court, man-to-man defense, but the Oakers showed with some offensive refinement they could be a team that competes for a playoff spot in a very tough division.
