Wizards cast spell on Prout

April 25, 2013

WAKEFIELD—The softball season may be just over three weeks old but the contenders in Division II-South are beginning to make themselves apparent.
As expected, everyone is chasing East Greenwich (5-1, 5-0 D-II South) so far but Monday afternoon West Warwick (3-1, 3-1 D-II South) made a statement that it’s at the top of that next tier along with Pilgrim (4-1, 3-1 D-II South).
“It’s looking like it’s going to pan out that way,” West Warwick coach Brian Palazzo said. “It’s looking like it’s going to be one of the three of us; either East Greenwich, Pilgrim or us.”

Narragansett rolling through D-III

NARRAGANSETT—Six games into the season the Narragansett softball team has yet to be tested in Division III and at this point it’s questionable whether or not that challenge will ever come.
Having faced every team in D-III so far – except Block Island and Shea – the Mariners have rolled over their opposition by a combined 73-14 this season.
The games may not have been competitive so far but after the season the Mariners had last year, they’ll take it.

'Gansett coasts past Warwick

WARWICK – In the face of playing three matches in three days, the Narragansett High School boys tennis team had a nearly flawless start to their week as they traveled north to face Warwick Veterans.
The Mariners wasted no time as they swept the Hurricanes, 7-0, in a match that lasted less than an hour.
More impressive than how quickly Narragansett dispatched their opponents was the fact they completed their shutout losing just three games in the process.

Mariners leading pack in D-III

NARRAGANSETT—Last spring the Narragansett girls lacrosse team had a tremendous season – going 12-2 in the regular season – but fell just short of making the Division II Championship after a semifinal loss to Tiverton.
Now in Division III, the Mariners are looking like they have what it takes to make it to the championship.
“We’re going pretty strong,” senior captain Chandler Lemay said. “It’s a little fallback from last year being in D-II but we’re still trying our hardest this year.”

Lacrosse team off to good start

April 25, 2013

COVENTRY — In its first year of varsity competition this Coventry lacrosse team was just happy to win a playoff game and reach the Division III semifinals.
This season, simply making the playoffs isn’t the goal for a team with plenty of lacrosse experience. The Oakers, behind the attack play of Ethan Tryhubczak and Alex Izzi, the middie play of Zach Allen and Jake Harrington and the goalkeeping of Kyle Marquis have bigger goals in 2013.

Knights put up fight vs. Oakers

April 25, 2013

WEST GREENWICH — The result was predictable. The road to the result wasn’t.
The undefeated Coventry volleyball team traveled just a few miles down Route 3 to face winless Exeter-West Greenwich Tuesday night. The Oakers had lost just three games this season, while the very inexperienced Scarlet Knights had won just two games.
Coventry returned home with its perfect record still intact after a sweep, but the Oakers were forced to work a little harder than they wanted to in a 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 victory over the Knights.
