Gilmartin hoping to change things at NK

August 29, 2012

Turning around the North Kingstown football program isn’t going to be
something that can be done overnight.
Joe Gilmartin has never said it was and never made a promise to anyone that this season, his first as head coach of the Skippers, will be easy.
But it is a chance to be a part of something he hopes will be great down the line.
“It takes a long time to develop a new culture,” Gilmartin says. “... There’s a lot of things going on and you have to be able to get people to buy into those things.”

Gibbons ready for job as SK girls soccer coach

August 16, 2012

It’s not going to be easy replacing a legend.
But Toby Gibbons is ready to take on the challenge.
After 21 seasons and three state titles, Jim Kelly retired as South Kingstown girls soccer coach in the offseason and Gibbons – who also serves as the head coach for the hockey and golf teams at SK – replaces him and is ready to make a mark of his own.

Prout names O'Malley boys basketball coach

August 15, 2012

The biggest move in Rhode Island high school basketball this offseason was Eric Simonelli’s departure from Prout up north to La Salle.
Replacing him wasn’t going to be easy, but first-year Prout athletic director Mike Traficante thinks the school – and the program – have their man.
After a summer of searching, Traficante told The Times Wednesday that Westerly boys basketball assistant coach Jed O’Malley will take over for Simonelli this season, beating out two other finalists for the job.

Andrade highlights field at Rhode Island Open

August 6, 2012

Rhode Island native and current CVS/Caremark Charity Classic co-host Billy Andrade joins the field of the Rhode Island Open this week for the first time in almost 30 years, RIGA Executive Director Bob Ward announced after the 29th Stroke Play Championship last Wednesday.
Andrade and the rest of the field will play at Ledgemont Country Club Tuesday and Wednesday and the top 40 plus ties come back for the final round Thursday.
Andrade tees off the 10th hole Tuesday at 8:36 a.m. with RIGA Amateur champion Charlie Blanchard and Geoffrey Fisk; the trio tee off No. 1 Wednesday at 12:51.

Randall leads youth movement at Stroke Play

August 2, 2012

CRANSTON – On the 71st hole of the 29th RIGA Stroke Play Championship, soon-to-be-47-year old Charlie Blanchard and 19-year old Jamison Randall were tied for the lead.
And with one swing from Blanchard and one from Randall, a changing of the guard took place.
Trying to avoid a playoff, Blanchard sailed a 9-iron over the green from 150 yards out while Randall identified a flyer lie in the rough, hit his approach on the green and when Blanchard couldn’t get up and down, two-putted for a one-stroke win, avenging his loss to Blanchard in the State Amateur last month.

SK American, National keep winning

July 18, 2012

South Kingstown Little League keeps doing its thing.
Both the South Kingstown American and South Kingstown National 11-year old All-Star teams were victorious Tuesday in the District 3 losers' bracket quarterfinals, as SKA beat East Greenwich 4-2 and SKN topped Warwick Continental 3-0.
SK National's starting pitcher Thomas Whitford had the best performance of the evening, striking out 14. National scored three times in the third inning, which was more than enough, and Sam Kaczynski came on in relief of Whitford to earn the save.
