Prout did what it could vs. Avengers

September 28, 2013

EAST GREENWICH – It was a tough draw for a team still trying to find its rhythm as the Prout girls tennis team travelled north to face East Greenwich last Thursday. The season’s struggles continued for the banged up and undermanned Crusaders squad as they took the courts against the top-ranked Avengers and were swept, 7-0.
“We’re missing four players,” said Prout coach Steven Matzner. “I told them on the bus just to compete as hard as they could knowing that’s the best team in the state.

Though the Rebels ended a brutal 12-game losing streak by beating Division II contender West Warwick 35-27 in a non-league matchup last weekend, Hendricken took Friday night’s contest 36-14, continuing SK’s losing streak within the division.

Cross-town battle goes to Crusaders

September 19, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—Aside from the obvious proximity between South Kingstown and Prout, Wednesday’s Division I-South girls volleyball game was a critical contest given the path each squad had worn through the first third of the season.
The Rebels (1-2 D-I South) and Crusaders (2-2 D-I South) each entered the game having beaten Chariho but lost to both North Kingstown and Coventry, meaning third place – and potentially playoff seeding down the line – was up for grabs.

September 19, 2013

Waves have been hard to come by for the past two months.
Contest organizers kept their fingers crossed, in hopes of having surf for the 2nd Annual “Catch A Curl” ESA contest, held this past Saturday. ESA kids had a great time in some fun surf, with the event held at the Westerly Town Beach.
“We were very fortunate to get sunny skies, warm air temperatures, and nice surf for the second straight year,” contest director Mistral Dobson said. “The level of surfing was up several notches this year for sure.”
