URI offense searching for right tempo

August 15, 2013

KINGSTON — The beginning of Saturday’s scrimmage exhibited the chicken-or-the-egg conundrum the up-tempo Rhode Island offense faces this season.
The Rams want to run their zone-read attack at a fast pace, but they can’t play fast if they aren’t make plays. However, the Rams make plays when they are moving quickly and keeping the defense off-balance.

Frosh Saintfleur getting attention

August 15, 2013

KINGSTON — Elijah Saintfleur has plenty of time to earn a starting spot on the Rhode Island offense, but he isn’t wasting any of it.
The red-shirt freshman tight end from West Warwick was one of the stars of the off-season training program who also had a superb spring game. Saintfleur impressed coach Joe Trainer to the point that Saintfleur started Saturday’s first scrimmage of camp playing with the first unit.

Narragansett Town defends its crown

August 15, 2013

When the 2013 Rhode Island Lifeguard Tournament came to a close on Saturday evening at East Matunuck, as has been nearly as much of a tradition as the tournament itself since the turn of the century, the lifeguards of Narragansett Town Beach swept the night’s events to cap off yet another tournament championship.

Rhody football going all in

August 15, 2013

KINGSTON — Rhode Island football coach Joe Trainer isn’t a poker player, but when he was trying to come up with a theme for the 2013 campaign following an embarrassing, winless 2012 season, he was immediately drawn to poker.
“Every year we try to come up with a mantra,” Trainer said after Saturday’s first scrimmage of training camp. “It’s human nature when you’re not having success – trying to make it a monetary analysis – you cash out. In society you don’t double down when you’re not having success.

Conditions could not have been better for the Narrow River ESA SUP Race Series No. 2, held this past Sunday at Narrow River.
Racers from as far away as Utah competed, as well as some very fast Bay Staters, who travelled to challenge the local competitors.
Race Director Jason Considine of Narrow River Kayak plotted out an entirely new course for this 4.5-mile race, which directed competitors north up the river, into a small inlet, and then back out again.

For the past 26 years Joel Tuoni has spent his time coaching girls basketball and softball at various high schools throughout the state.
He has been in charge of both programs at South Kingstown High School – his alma mater as a graduate of the class of 1982 – for the last decade but as Tuoni said by phone Tuesday morning, “life’s about changes.”
Tuoni will not be returning to coach the Rebels this season as he is planning to move to Florida to finish up his bachelor’s degree.

Offense proved to be difference for Coventry 13s

August 8, 2013

MANCHESTER, N.H. — The Coventry Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-stars won the state title with its deep pitching staff.
Coventry won the New England title with its potent lineup.
After scoring only 33 runs in their four games at McCarthy Field to win the state title, Coventry scored 36 runs in its two games Thursday night to defeat Plymouth, Mass. and claim the state title. Couple that performance with Coventry’s 14 runs in an elimination game against Westfield, Mass. the day before and it becomes clear whey Coventry is headed to Williston, N.D. for the Babe Ruth World Series.

Coventry 13s claims New England title

August 8, 2013

MANCHESTER, N.H. — It took a year long than they’d hope it would take, but the all-stars from Coventry can finally call themselves New England champions.
After falling short of their goal of going to Williamsport, Penn. for last year’s Little League World Series, Coventry’s top baseball players grew a year old and a year wiser and added a little more talent and won another state title.
Coventry’s New England title dream was derailed by Plymouth, Mass. in the winners’ bracket final, but the Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-stars came back with a vengeance Thursday night at Gill Stadium.
