For most teams there is usually one game that it looks forward to all season; the rivalry contest against a neighboring school.
That is not the case for the Prout boys lacrosse team; this season the Crusaders’ will have six.
As a result of realignment Prout will compete in a somewhat new looking Division II-South that features neighbors East Greenwich, Narragansett and South Kingstown, as well as Aquidneck Island foe Middletown.
East Greenwich is the defending Division II softball champions after defeating West Warwick in the finals last season.
Pilgrim eliminated Exeter-West Greenwich from the second round of the consolation bracket before falling to the Wizards in the next round.
NARRAGANSETT – With the newly realigned Rhode Island Interscholastic League divisions, the 2013 boys lacrosse season kicked off with 2012 Division II runner-up South Kingstown taking on last season’s Division III runner-up Narragansett. The neighbors are now division foes in what should hopefully be a competitive D-II rivalry for a few years to come.
NARRAGANSETT—Last season the Narragansett softball team went winless in Division II and more often than not couldn’t hang with their competition.
Now in Division III, the Mariners might be on the polar opposite end of the spectrum.
COVENTRY — If you’re planning on going to a Coventry baseball game this season you might want to bring a roster because nearly every starter from last season’s team has graduated.
For the first time in two decades the Oakers reached the Division I semifinals where they lost a pair of one-run games to eventual state champion Hendricken, but All-State pitchers Matt Laferriere and Cote Nichols along with talented players Alex Zannella, Blake Rapecis, Troy Fredette and Brandon Sullivan have moved on.
COVENTRY — The Coventry softball team committed two errors and made a couple of other defensive lapses in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday which allowed visiting North Kingstown to pull away for a 7-3 nine-inning victory.
COVENTRY — Rachel Ball had two hits in the first three innings of Coventry’s season opener against Toll Gate Monday, but those hits were scrubbed away when the game was abandoned in the top of the fourth inning because of heavy rain and wind.
A first-team, All-Southeastern Conference performer in his senior season, South Kingstown’s Erik Murphy has had a tremendous career playing for the University of Florida men’s basketball team.
KINGSTON—The University of Rhode Island baseball team kicked off their A10 schedule over the weekend, with a rough series against defending conference champions Dayton at Bill Beck Memorial Field.
WOOD RIVER JCT.—Over the past few years the Chariho boys outdoor track team has been both the hunter and the hunted.
Last season the Chargers were without their top runner, Mike Marsella, and fell just three points short of a second consecutive outdoor title.
