NARRAGANSETT—It was a tremendous summer for the North Kingstown Gold eighth-grade basketball team as they entered the Narragansett Basketball Youth League as the premier first seed before going on to defeat local rivals North Kingstown Blue in the semi-finals and South Kingstown for the championship title.
In this opening game of last Thursday’s playoff matchups, NK Gold knocked off NK Blue by a margin of 20 points and the number two seed—South Kingstown—slipped by Chariho Green with an outstanding comeback in the middle of the second half to win, 42-37.

URI Women’s Soccer off to great start

August 28, 2014

KINGSTON—URI Women’s Soccer opened their 2014 season this week starting on Friday against in-state rival Providence College before hosting their home-opener on Sunday against Fairfield.
The two games were nearly the perfect start that URI Women’s Head Coach Mike Needham was looking for, as they left Providence in a 1-1 two-overtime draw and then snuck out a thrilling 1-0 shutout to lift the young Rams to 1-0-1 in the early season.

Chariho finishes fantastic NYBA season

August 28, 2014

NARRAGANSETT—The Chariho Green eighth-graders weren’t victorious during Thursday night’s playoff game of the Narragansett Summer Basketball League, but they did accomplish something that very few Chariho middle school basketball teams have—an invite to the summer league postseason.
The single-elimination tournament included four teams moving on to play in the playoff rounds: South Kingstown, Chariho Green, and two North Kingstown teams. Green entered as the third best team playing and they would be matched up against a tough gritty South Kingstown team that had one loss on their resume.

NEWPORT—Things started to heat up in the New England Collegiate Baseball League earlier this week as the Newport Gulls claimed second place in the Southern Division, meaning the third place Ocean State Waves would have to travel to Newport to begin the opening divisional-round of the playoffs.
For a league that is commonly recognized to many people as the second-best summer collegiate league in the nation, it sure looked that way this past week during the first round playoffs with the new-look Rhode Island NECBL playoff rivalry stirring up.
