Knights could have bye in first round of D-I playoffs

October 30, 2013

WEST GREENWICH—Exeter-West Greenwich girls soccer coach Kevin Fraser has seen 19 senior days come and go during his tenure coaching the Knights, each one special in their own way.
Few – if any – have had the track record of this season’s senior class though, a group that has gone from winning three Division II Championships in a row to this season thriving amongst the state’s best in Division I.

EAST GREENWICH – Non-league game or not, there was still much to be gained by both squads as the East Greenwich and North Kingstown football teams met at EG’s Carcieri Field Friday night. The Avengers had been routed on their home turf just one week prior – a 34-0 loss to Moses Brown – while the Skippers themselves were regaining their game.
Two weeks ago North suffered its first defeat of the season – a lopsided 34-8 loss to Rogers – but last week got back on track by handing Cumberland its first defeat 36-14.

A legend takes his leave

WEST GREENWICH—It all started with a phone call 24 years ago.
“I’ll never forget that phone call I got in 1989,” Steve McGrane says. “It changed my life.”
McGrane was just 26-years old when he took that call – a job proposition to coach the Exeter-West Greenwich junior high girls basketball team – from superintendent Jim Erinakes and the fledgling Exeter-West Greenwich Regional School District.
“EWG didn’t even have a high school yet,” McGrane says. “I said, ‘junior high girls basketball? I’ll give it a shot,’ and I fell in love with it.”

PAWTUCKET – For the North Kingstown girls tennis team, 2013 had been called a ‘dream season’ by some. Somewhat unexpectedly, the Skippers ran to a 9-3 regular season, finishing third in Division I-Met A behind East Greenwich and LaSalle.
The Skipper awoke from their dream, however, when their season came to an end last Thursday in the RIIL Division I semifinals with a 4-1 loss to LaSalle at Slater Park.
“Terrific team, LaSalle,” said North coach Tim O’Neill. “More power to them. A lot of depth a lot of talent.

PAWTUCKET—When people remember the Narragansett girls tennis team winning the 2013 Division II Championship they’ll remember Eily Sullivan erasing a 4-1, third-set deficit to clinch the title five games later against Toll Gate.
They’ll remember Brooke McGreen and Ashley Kennedy surviving a slew of match points to close out their match 11-9 in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles or Olivia Scalora dominating her match at No. 1 singles after falling to the same opponent in three sets just nine days earlier.
