Last summer the Wickford 11-Year Old All-Stars were involved in two of the most exciting games in the District 3 Tournament regardless of age level â albeit both in losing efforts.
After running the table in the winners bracket they faced off against Chariho only one win away from winning the district.
At the time Wickford coach Ryan Gwaltney called the first game of the district finals âa rollercoasterâ and it might have been an understatement in retrospect.
It became their M.O. for the tournament. For their third straight game, the South Kingstown National 11/12-Year Old All-Stars came out and spotted their opponent a big lead in the early innings. Unfortunately, the SK bats went cold after they fell behind early on Tuesday night and they dropped a 9-2 decision to Warwick West Side.
After a tough loss to East Greenwich in the second round of the 11/12-Year Old All-Star District 3 tournament last Sunday, the SK American baseball team came out swinging on Tuesday night, putting a 16-4, four inning hurt on Westerly to keep their title hopes alive.
âWe took it right to them,â said Americans manager Ken Munroe. âAll the kids hit.
ââŠThey were in the zone for hitting yesterday.â
COVENTRYâAfter watching three strikes go by in his first at-bat 11-year Loren Vaughn wasnât about to make the same mistake twice at Paine Field Tuesday.
âItâs just that the first time up I was nervous,â the Coventry American center fielder said.
After that it was pretty clear nerves were no longer a factor.
Vaughn hit three home runs in his final three at-bats â including two in the third inning and a grand slam in the fourth â and recorded nine RBI as Coventry National walloped North Kingstown 22-0 in the consolation bracket of the 12-Year Old All-Stars District 3 Tournament.
When training camps open in the fall, South Kingstown native Erik Murphy will be looking to pull off a feat very few Rhode Islanders have; become just the seventh player from the Unionâs smallest state â and first from South County â to play in the NBA.
Murphy â along with Providence native Ricky Ledo, the 40th overall pick â will be looking to join the likes of Marvin Barnes, Ernie Calverly, Ernie DiGregorio, Tom Garrick, Joe Hassett and Owen Wells after being selected by the Chicago Bulls in the second round, 49th overall, in last Thursdayâs NBA Draft.
Thanks to an eight-run third inning the South Kingstown American 9/10-Year Old All-Stars are in the District 3 Winners Bracket finals.
SK American scored a 16-3 victory in four innings over South Kingstown National Sunday at Tuckertown Park and will now host Warwick Continental Saturday at 10 a.m. with a berth to the district championship on the line.
âWhen you stay in the winners bracket you get more rest for your pitchers,â American coach Dave Palazzetti said. âIt is helpful to get out of the blocks quickly.â
SMITHFIELDâFor 81 of Rhode Islandâs best high school seniors Saturdayâs 2013 Senior All-Star Classic was a chance to lace up the cleats one last time before moving on to the next chapter in their lives.
âIt was awesome. I missed it,â Narragansettâs Dillon Sheridan said. âPlaying with a whole new group of kids I never had played with before was a good experience.â
