WEST GREENWICH — Freshman midfielder Laura Palmer sat on the bench and watched her Exeter-West Greenwich girls soccer teammates battle No. 5 Portsmouth in wet and windy conditions for 95 minutes Thursday afternoon.
And then coach Kevin Fraser summoned Palmer from the bench and replaced Lane West with the freshman in a tie game in EWG’s first ever Division I playoff game.

NORTH SCITUATE—Contrary to what most high school students are likely to believe, Hall and Oates is not the generic supermarket brand of Raisin Bran.
The popular late ’70s, early ’80s duo, however, was responsible for the Billboard Top 100 No. 1 song in early November of 1981, ‘Private Eyes.’
At the same time the Chariho girls cross country team had its eyes set on finishing off a tremendous season; second in Class B with and 8-1 record and runner up at the state championship meet.

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION – It was a dark and stormy night…
A clichéd prelude to many tales of terror, but not one many foresaw using last week when the Chariho girls soccer team faced Middletown in the Division III quarterfinals on Halloween night.

EAST GREENWICH—For seniors Hollie Pryor, Elana Lamont, Emily Manning, Alexis Marsella and Haley Wilcox there’s no way around it; last Wednesday’s loss to La Salle stung.
After a strong regular season the Chariho field hockey team’s run came to an end with a 2-0 loss to the Rams in the Division II semifinals, marking the final game for the Chargers’ five seniors.

NARRAGANSETT – Saturday was meant to be a big day for the Narragansett football team. Not only was it senior day for 17 Mariners, but facing a similar two-loss Middletown team, it was a contest rife with playoff implications for both sides.
The Mariners kept it tight, but a late explosion by the Islanders helped them pull ahead and run away with a 27-7 victory.

Crusaders advance in shootout

WAKEFIELD – It was a loss that sat with Prout boys soccer coach Tim Ryan all offseason, fuel for the upcoming year.
Heavily favored, his Crusaders were upset by a sixth seeded Davies team, 3-0, in the 2012 quarterfinals.
There was no looking past them this time, but history still nearly repeated itself on Saturday as the 11th seeded Patriots pushed Prout to the brink in the Division III quarterfinals, before the Crusaders pulled out the 2-1 win in penalty kicks.

Semis up next for Rebels

EAST PROVIDENCE – It was a night of ups and downs for the South Kingstown girls volleyball team on Monday night.
It was a very bleak start to the night, but the Rebels overcame and escaped East Providence with a 11-25, 27-25, 25-23, 14-25, 15-7 win in the Division I quarterfinals over the Townies.
“Scary there for a while,” said South coach Chris Fagan. “A lot of guys are sick. They’re just getting over it. …Took a couple games to warm-up with the weekend.
“[Playing on Friday] would have been better for us because of the momentum coming off Prout.”
