EWG girls making transition to playing against state’s best

August 29, 2013

The Exeter-West Greenwich girls soccer team’s résumé over the past three seasons speaks for itself.
The Knights haven’t lost a game since 2010 and have won the last three Division II Championships in convincing fashion.
You have to go back even further to find the team’s last losing season as a 6-10-0 record in 2005 marked the last time the club finished below .500.
This season, however, nothing is guaranteed, for the Knights are moving up to Division I to try and prove they belong playing amongst the state’s best.

NK aiming for return to glory

August 29, 2013

After a reasonably successful 2012 campaign where they finished the regular season tied for fifth in Division I, the North Kingstown boys soccer team has returned to the pitch for 2013 with the goal in mind that, as good as last year may have been, this year will be better.
“We were decent last year, playing on all cylinders and then we ran into Hendricken,” said Skippers coach Kyle Froberg. “That’s how it goes.

Avengers aim for a return to playoffs

August 29, 2013

The season that will stretch into November is not yet two weeks old for the East Greenwich High School boys soccer team. They are still a week away from the official start to 2013 with their season opener against Cranston West. It is early.
That is a good thing for a young, developing Avengers squad that needs all the time it can get. For East, it is not going to be about how the team starts this fall, but how they finish.

Injuries are already taking their toll on EG girls soccer

August 29, 2013

Last fall was a year beset with injuries for the East Greenwich High School girls soccer team. In the five proceeding years, they customarily finished the regular season in second and made deep runs into the playoffs each year, but as a number of starters went down with a variety of injuries throughout the season, the Avengers took a step back in 2012, finishing the regular season tied for eighth place at 6-4-4, managing just one win in their final five games and losing in the preliminary round of the playoffs.

Spikers want to build on success

A highly competitive team in a highly competitive division, the East Greenwich High School girls volleyball team faired well in their first regular season playing in Division II last fall. They posted a 15-3 record, lost fewer games than any other team in the division (16) and ended in a five-way tie for the division’s best record.
Seeded third headed into the playoffs, the Avengers made a run to the semifinals, where the magic of 2012 ran out and they were swept by eventual state champion Exeter-West Greenwich. A disappointing end to an otherwise brilliant season.

Chargers hoping to make return to postseason play

August 29, 2013

The Chariho boys soccer team hasn’t had a winning season since capturing the Division I Championship in 2009 and the past two years have been tough ones for the Chargers.
On the heels of a 3-13-2 season in 2011 the Chargers didn’t fare any better last fall, turning in a 3-11-0 record at season’s end.
Chariho’s struggles could very well be coming to an end though as this year’s team features 14 seniors and slew of other talented, veteran players.

Chariho picking up where it left off

August 29, 2013

Last season was a giant leap forward for the Chariho girls soccer program.
After making an improbable run for Division II Championship in 2000 – with a .500 regular season record no less – the Chargers returned to the playoffs with a sub .500 record the following year.
From there Chariho spent the next decade toiling at the bottom of the division through three and four-win seasons until moving down to Division III in 2012.
