Mariners still undefeated after rout of Wizards

September 28, 2013

WEST WARWICK — The undefeated Narragansett volleyball team easily won the first two games of Wednesday night’s clash with West Warwick before the Wizards opened up a four-point lead midway through the third game.
It would’ve been easy for the Mariners to chalk the game up as a loss and win the contest in the next game, but that’s not the mentality Narragansett first-year coach Abby Hummel has ingrained in the team.

WAKEFIELD — There wasn’t much separating the undefeated West Warwick and Prout boys soccer teams entering Tuesday’s Division III showdown.
After 80 minutes, there still wasn’t much separation.
The Crusaders, thanks to a third-minute goal from senior forward Kevin Brew opened the scoring, but the Wizards received goals on either side of halftime from junior forwards Cameron Price and Chris Peixoto to lift West Warwick to an impressive 2-1 road win.

NARRAGANSETT—As the night crept forward and lights buzzed, the sounds of tennis rackets rhythmically persisted Tuesday evening at Sprague Park.
In a match that started some two hours earlier ’Gansett’s Brooke McGreen and Ashley Kennedy pushed on, deadlocked in a battle with Westerly’s Margo Douglas and Katie Kuzmic with the overall match on the line.
Fatigue – both mental and physical – had clearly set in for both sides as follow throughs lacked the vigor they once had.

So far, so good for EWG tennis

As much as every coach wants to win every match most will admit that as long as they see improvement they’ll leave a game satisfied.
For the Exeter-West Greenwich girls tennis team, Tuesday’s match at Scituate was a concrete example that the Knights are better than they were at the start of September.
After opening the season by getting swept at home by the Spartans EWG gave Scituate all it could handle Tuesday before falling 5-2.

COVENTRY — In just two days the Coventry girls soccer team went from a team that could barely muster a shot against Portsmouth to beating one of the contenders for the Division I title.
Just two days after being comprehensively beaten by Portsmouth in a game where the score line didn’t indicate the Patriots’ true domination, the Oakers recorded what could be considered their biggest victory since moving up to Division I in 2008.

Knights have little trouble in D-IV opener

PROVIDENCE—It wasn’t 62 points, but the Exeter-West Greenwich football team very well could have scored that many if it had so desired.
The Scarlet Knights – who played up at Division I Cranston East and Division III East Greenwich in their two preseason contests – rolled over the Providence Country Day/Wheeler/Juanita Sanchez Co-op 35-14 in their league opener Saturday afternoon at Conley Stadium.

Skippers win wild 2OT game

WEST WARWICK — Through the first two games of the young football season it appears North Kingstown is finally buying what coach Joe Gilmartin has been selling them since the start of last season, while West Warwick still hasn’t heeded the words of coach Shane Lagor.
The Wizards, who came into the season with Super Bowl dreams dancing in their heads, couldn’t score a touchdown in either of its overtime opportunities, while North Kingstown finally made the most of its chances in the second overtime.
