NK leaving opening loss in past

April 25, 2013

COVENTRY — The final score of Friday’s Division I-South game would indicate the young Coventry baseball team suffered its second straight heavy defeat.
But there’s a big difference between the terrible five innings the Oakers played Wednesday against Toll Gate and the solid seven innings they put together in a 9-1 defeat to reigning Division I-South champion North Kingstown.

NK falls in high scoring contest

NORTH KINGSTOWN – According to North Kingstown boys lacrosse coach Steve Alviti this season has gotten off to a “perplexing” start.
Not much became any clearer Monday as the Skippers dropped their third straight decision, a 17-10 loss to Barrington.
“I can’t tell you,” said a speechless Alviti following Monday’s contest. “This is how we’ve been playing.
“It’s just bad decision making. When we’re on the field we lose sight of things. We make some mistakes, let team’s get ahead of us and then we can’t get out of the hole. It’s been the same way the past three games.”

South spikers edge North in four

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Generally, there is no need for extra hype when any North Kingstown team squares off against South Kingstown.
This is what made it a bit of a surprise when a sluggish Skippers boys volleyball team took to their home court and fell to the Rebels 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21 Tuesday night.
“I was disappointed in how [my team] performed,” North coach Joanne Fitts said. “We just seemed to be one half step behind. I don’t understand that, so that’s my job between tonight and tomorrow.”

Browne, Cressman leading Avs

April 25, 2013

Last season the East Greenwich golf team had to play their way into the state tournament after finishing the regular season in third place in the Central Division.
This spring the Avengers could very well find themselves in the same position.
The Avs kicked off the season Tuesday with a 166-238 victory over Warwick Veterans on a blustery day at Warwick Country Club.
While 166 is a solid score for a first match, EG coach
Marc Brocato feels his team could be capable of much better marks this season.

Undefeated Eagles ground EG

EAST GREENWICH—Barrington’s Mary Coogan, Kelly Dolan and Madeline Soutter are three of the best girls lacrosse players in the state.
Tuesday at East Greenwich they showed why.
The Barrington trio combined for 10 goals as the Eagles went on to down the Avengers 17-7 Tuesday in a battle of Division I leaders.
“This team is the best team in the state, we knew that and they played like it,” senior Marielle Kraft said. “They never let down no matter what the score is on the board and to have them be denying us the entire game was really difficult.

One game at a time for Avengers

EAST GREENWICH—One game at a time.
It’s about as big of a cliché as there is in sports but for the East Greenwich boys lacrosse team it’s the only thing it can do at this point in the season.
“As long as there’s continued improvement,” EG boys lacrosse coach Brian Trapani adds as a caveat. “Are we doing things better today than we did yesterday?
“Today everyone got a good amount of playing time so the team grows in that way. We got some shots, cleared the ball after some weak clears early on…we did a good job moving the ball on offense so it’s an improvement.”

Narragansett keeps rolling along

April 25, 2013

NEWPORT–The hits just keep on coming for the Narragansett baseball team.
The Mariners battered their way to a fifth consecutive victory Monday, putting a 9-4 beating on Rogers at Cardines Field.
“We’ve been on a roll offensively,” Narragansett coach Keith Vellone said. “We came out, got two in the first and just kept rolling from there.
“I give the kids a lot of credit. They picked up where we left off in the previous game.”
