With Jim Baron released from his contract â or, in laymanâs terms, fired â as head coach of the University of Rhode Island menâs basketball coach along with 10-year assistant Pat Clarke and first-year assistant Larry Harris, the only coach still left standing is a name any URI fan is familiar with.
Preston Murphy, who played guard for the Rams from 1995-1999, returned to Kingston as an as assistant coach in 2010 and, after Sundayâs decision from URI Direction of Athletics Thorr Bjorn, is the only coach left standing.

PROVIDENCE â Larry Harris has been around college basketball long enough and when word came down Sunday that University of Rhode Island menâs basketball coach was being released from his contract and Harris and fellow assistant Pat Clarke wouldnât have their contracts renewed, he wasnât surprised.
âI was more disappointed than anything,â Harris said. â[Baron] has done a good job there and itâs the old analogy â when a guy is down letâs kick him.â

PROVIDENCE - The old adage is defense wins championships.
The Narragansett girls basketball team will find out for sure Saturday afternoon.
Using an aggressive three-quarter court trap, the Mariners forced 27 turnovers and in the second half turned most of them into points as Narragansett outscored Moses Brown by 22 points in the final 12 minutes, 40 seconds in its 55-32 win Tuesday night in the Division II Semifinals at Rhode Island College.
The Mariners move on to the D-II final Saturday at the Ryan Center at 4:30 against Classical, which beat Johnston 38-37 in early game Tuesday.
