COVENTRY — The Coventry club lacrosse team probably thought the first home match in school history would be played on pristine grass in front of a large crowd on a beautiful, sunny New England spring day.
There was a decent crowd at Wednesday’s historic event, but the weather was the antithesis of what the players were hoping for.

March 29, 2011

Prout senior basketball star Emily Caswell - who was named MVP of the Division II championship game after she scored 20 points in the Crusaders' 40-24 win over Mount St. Charles - will head to Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey, next fall to play basketball and pursue a degree in forensic science.

Rams' season ends

March 21, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team saw its roller-coaster season end with a 66-54 loss to Central Florida in the quarterfinals of the CBI Tournament Tuesday night.
After leading 30-27 at the half, the Rams failed to find a way to stop Central Florida, which opened the second half with an 18-5 run.
Delory James led URI with 18 points, scoring nine of the team's first 13 in the game. No other Ram had double figures and URI hit just 20 of 48 from the floor and 6 of 18 3-pointers.

PROVIDENCE — Coventry junior three-sport athlete Alex Zannella is a winner.
No, Zannella isn’t a winner in the clichéd, metaphorical sense of the term. The Oaker is a winner because he’s a talented athlete, who works hard and frequently finds himself playing with like-minded players.
Whether it be on the baseball diamond, the football field or the hockey ice, Zannella’s teams have usually been successful and he is usually one of the big reasons for that success.

Oakers tough in back, up front

March 14, 2011

WEST WARWICK — Offense might’ve carried the Coventry hockey team to a 16-1-0-1 record and the Division II-Central title.
But it’s been senior goalie Spencer Patti and the Oakers’ stingy defense that has Coventry on the precipice of its first Division II title since 2003.
After scoring nearly five goals a game during the regular season, Coventry has managed to score just three goals in every playoff game. It’s on the other end of the ice where teams have found the Oakers tough to beat.
