COVENTRY – The Coventry Oakers made a statement to the rest of Division I last night.
With the Division I leading St. Raphael Academy Saints strolling into town, the Oakers demonstrated that they will have to be mentioned as a contender for the state crown with a convincing 92-72 victory over the Saints, the first in the school’s history and improved their record to 9-4 in league play.

WEST WARWICK — Goals have been hard to come by for the Coventry High hockey team over the last two weekends.
After scoring at least four goals during their eight-game winning streak, the Oakers haven’t lit the lamp more than three times in their last three games, and that includes Saturday night’s game against the only team in Division II with just one win, North Smithfield.

Wrestling season reaching crescendo

January 26, 2011

WARWICK — The wrestling state championships begin in less than a month at the Providence Career and Technical Academy and plenty of wrestlers, through their performances at in-state and out-of-state tournaments, have started to make their case as title favorite.
And with only a few big tournaments left this season (Capital City Classic in Concord, N.H. and the Methuen (Mass.) Invitational) Rhode Island wrestlers have represented themselves well on the New England stage.

SRIN sports reporters honored by NENPA

January 24, 2011

SRIN likes to think it has the best sports writers around - and now it has some proof.
Former SRIN sports reporter Paul J. Spetrini - currently editor of the Standard-Times - and sports reporter Eric Rueb were both honored by the New England Newspaper and Press Association for work they did in 2010.
Spetrini placed top three in the "Weekly Class 1 Sports Column" category for a column he wrote on the Exeter-West Greenwich girls softball team and their quest for a title after the tragic death of coach Mike Messier in late February.
The award is the first of any for Spetrini.

URI Notebook: Murray a game-changer

January 22, 2011

KINGSTON – The last play will be the easiest to remember, especially because of the way it turned out.
Everyone in the Ryan Center knew Marquis Jones was getting the ball and that explains why La Salle did everything it could to prevent him from taking it to the basket, instead forcing the senior to take a 3-pointer deep off the left wing.
It was the play that decided Saturday’s game, but it wasn’t the reason URI lost to La Salle, 76-75, Saturday afternoon.
