Caprio steps down as chair of RI Democratic Party

Former state representative for District 34, David Caprio, resigned as chair of the Rhode Island Democratic Party Tuesday, one day after it came to light that state police are investigating his role in obtaining concession contracts at three state beaches.
“I’m not making any comment on anything,” Caprio said when reached by phone Thursday morning.

Shields files lawsuit against CRMC, Deepwater Wind

NARRAGANSETT – In light recent public hearings by the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council and the Ocean Special Area Management Plan Subcommittee that allegedly did not follow the council’s own regulations, Narragansett resident and chair of Deepwater Resistance, a Rhode Island political action committee, Robert Shields, has filed a formal complaint with the state Superior Court.
The complaint comes as a result of the original proposal by Deepwater Wind, LLC to construct a 30-megawatt wind farm 3 miles southeast of Block Island.

SPC approves easement for 45-acre Benson parcel

PROVIDENCE—On Tuesday evening, the State Properties Committee unanimously granted the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management an easement to conserve approximately 45 acres of open space along Snuff Mill Road in North Kingstown. The property, which was approved for purchase by the North Kingstown Town Council this past May, rests in the Narrow River Watershed area and was previously owned by the Benson family.

Developer creates a sportsman’s private oasis

Chariho grad starts aspirational toy company

CHARLESTOWN — When Janna Eaves was a senior at Chariho High School, she thought she’d pursue acting as a career, but the encouragement of one teacher changed her life direction.
“I was in drama club, I thought I wanted to be an actress for a while – I was really into acting then. It wasn’t until late in my senior year that I thought I should try engineering,” Eaves said.
“It was Lori Kilmartin and her AP (Advanced Placement) chemistry class. She pushed the idea that I was good at it and I could pursue it as a career, and I should try and go farther with science,” she said.

Emergency personnel earn promotions

EAST GREENWICH — Four emergency service members not only rose through the ranks of their respective departments, but the majority of them also continued family traditions in the process.
In front of friends, family and proud residents at Town Hall Monday evening, Stephen Garrett and Michael Monaghan each were sworn in as lieutenant for the East Greenwich Police Department and the East Greenwich Fire Department, respectively, while Glen Terilli was promoted to sergeant of the EGPD and Andrew Campbell became a permanent member of the EGFD.

Raptakis announces quest for re-election

Making it official by means of a press release issued last week, District 33 Senator and local business owner Lou Raptakis announced his intent to run for re-election this November.
A Democrat representing East Greenwich, Coventry and West Greenwich, Raptakis is the owner of Venus Pizza in Coventry and a longtime legislator.
