Special ops jumpers, classic planes star in Air Show

NORTH KINGSTOWN – As a row of veteran fliers, family members and members of the Quonset Air Museum lined a chain-link fence in front of the nearby Quonset State Airport on Saturday, a single-engine plane with a checkerboard nose, stars on its wings and the word NAVY on its side blasted into action.

URI professor recognized by AERA

KINGSTON—With more than 40 years of teaching and educational research experience, University of Rhode Island Professor George Willis has worked towards challenging accepted methods in today’s schools. He has been rewarded for his diligence by the American Education Research Association (AERA), which has recognized him as a 2012 recipient of the ‘Division B Lifetime Achievement Award.’

SKHS top two graduates discuss their futures

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Erin McAlice and Richard Wu, Valedictorian and Salutatorian of South Kingstown High School’s class of 2012, were both surprised and excited when they learned they were at the top of their class.

“At the end it’s very close between the top five people,” McAlice said. “Richard and I were very close. I don’t think it’s necessarily a competition, I don’t think any of us saw it that way.”

Pier Council approves FY 2012-13 budget

NARRAGANSETT—The Town Council approved the fiscal year 2012-13 town budget on Wednesday evening. The group met in a special session in order to resolve any lingering concerns about the budget which council members may have held.

No members of the public were available or spoke regarding the budget. At the May 21 meeting, the budge was introduced as a first reading, and council members initially discussed their opinions of the general make-up of the budget.

Beloved teacher Missy Stark dies

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – South Kingstown High School teacher and local resident Missy Stark died Tuesday after a four month battle with bilinary tract cancer. Stark, 34, was a mother of three, adored teacher and community volunteer.

Exeter voters pass budget with little debate

EXETER—The Exeter Financial Town Meeting has, in years past, been a knock-down, drag-out affair of butting heads with lively personalities willing to hold debate for hours over even the slightest of increases in the town’s budget.
This year, the only thing voters couldn’t agree on was just how quickly they wanted to get out of the annual gathering.
