A breath of fresh air for inner city kids

RICHMOND—Parents gathered at the Richmond Elementary School this past Thursday to wait for their summer guests, inner-city kids from New York City. Every year, the Fresh Air Fund of Rhode Island organizes a volunteer summer program, through which local parents adopt a child from New York City into their homes for a few weeks during the summer.

“This is an awesome program,” said Kingston resident and volunteer Susan Axelrod.

With less than two weeks left before school resumes in North Kingstown, the question on the minds of countless teachers, administrators, parents and students is: Will the roof at Suzanne M. Henseler Quidnessett Elementary School be fixed in time for the first day of classes?
It appears that answer is a resounding 'no.'

Curmudgeon's Corner: Feedback is far more credible with a signature (OPINION)

In the years I have been writing this op-ed I recall receiving only two letters and several emails. The latter have been mostly complimentary.
Both letters, on the other hand, were pretty harsh. The first, written back in the second George W. Bush administration, accused me of being a conservative and “a Karl Rove stooge”. The latter charge I found interesting since I have never met or spoken to Mr. Rove and he wouldn’t know me if he bumped into me on the street.

Langevin dismayed at cyber security bill's defeat

A bipartisan bill meant to help protect the nation from a cyber attack failed passage by the U.S. Senate last week, much to the dismay of the bill's co-sponsor, Rhode Island Second District Rep. Jim Langevin. The local representative released a lengthy statement detailing his thoughts on this new development.

Former CHS coach indicted

PROVIDENCE - A former Chariho High School assistant soccer coach has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of receipt, possession and distribution of child pornography, the Dept. of Justice announced Wednesday.

White Nose Syndrome threatens local bat colony

August 13, 2012

WEST GREENWICH - The Woodville Barn at the University of Rhode Island W. Alton Jones Campus has been the spring and summer home for a thriving maternal colony of little brown bats for a very long time. Every March or April, the same colony returns to roost in the barn for the warmer months, and each member of the colony, which is females only, returns from its far away hibernation ready to bear one pup. It is a truly fascinating life cycle.

Disc golf legend rolls through Rhode Island

RICHMOND - On Tuesday man played the Willow Valley Disc Golf Course in Richmond unlike any other man that has ever played it before. It is no superpower or rare ability that sets this man apart from other course competitors, but an indomitable will to be the most well-traveled American ambassador of the game possible.
