Doyle brazenly moving on from URI

KINGSTON – Daniel E. Doyle Jr., beleaguered former executive director of the Institute for International Sport, is proposing to move the institute and its events to the University of Central Florida.

In early May, Doyle, 64, was indicted on 18 counts of embezzlement, obtaining money under false pretenses and forgery, after allegedly personally obtaining more than $1 million from Institute for International Sport funds.

Whalerock hearing continued to June 19

Whalerock President and Developer Larry LeBlanc appeared before the Charlestown Zoning Board Wednesday.

At the start of the second public hearing, LeBlanc said he reserves the right to withdraw his application at anytime.

Whalerock's attorney, Nicholas Gorham, continued to object to the town's involvement in the case.

Gorham presented an expert witness, Christopher Menge, senior vice president and principal consultant at Burlington, Mass.-based Harris Miller Miller & Hanson, Inc., to testify regarding noise control and the levels of audible sound the wind turbines will produce.

Merger signed into effect

June 5, 2013

EAST GREENWICH — On Monday, after eight months in the making, East Greenwich history was finally made.
With a few strokes of the pen, Gov. Lincoln Chafee made the merger of the East Greenwich Fire District into the Town of East Greenwich official inside a packed Chamber Room in Town Hall Monday evening, signifying a change in government that hasn’t been seen in 216 years.

Fire engulfs Jeep in Wakefield

June 4, 2013

Firefighters from Union Fire District extinguished a car blaze Tuesday morning in Wakefield.

A Jeep Wrangler was fully engulfed in flames in the Dale Carlia parking lot.

Leslie Perrin named SK teacher of the year

May 31, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Leslie Perrin, a district literacy coach, was recently named South Kingstown teacher of the year.
Perrin said she grew up surrounded by teachers in her family.
“I think it’s sort of in our blood,” she said.
Many aunts and uncles in her family worked as teachers, her sister, brother and husband are teachers as well.

Former URI hoops player sentenced

May 31, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Former University of Rhode Island basketball player Jonathan Holton was sentenced to two years probation Wednesday on a charge of video voyeurism.
Washington County Superior Court Judge Melanie Thunberg also ordered Holton, 22, with a last known address of 3925 Washington Ave., Miami, Fla., to undergo mental health counseling and have no contact of the victim.
