Tanzi, Valencia sponsor bill to repeal voter ID law

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Rep. Teresa Tanzi (D - Dist. 34, South Kingstown, Narragansett) has signed on as a primary sponsor to House Bill 7767, which seeks to repeal the voter identification law that Rhode Island passed in 2011.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Larry Valencia (D - Dist. 39, Richmond, Exeter, Hopkinton), simply removes the text “any person claiming to be a registered voter who desires to vote at a primary election, special election or general election shall provide proof of identity (at the polls)” from election laws.

Council approves support of CDBG funding for disaster relief grant

NARRAGANSETT – The town council unanimously approved a motion to adopt a resolution in support of three pending applications for CDBG funding in this year’s disaster relief grant round.

Michael DeLuca, director of community development, explained to the council Monday that the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Relief program is a special program issued out of sequence with the regular CDBG program by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He said the disaster relief program offers funding for repair and reconstruction of properties damaged in Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Irene and winter storm Nemo.

RIDE report says charter schools performing well in Rhode Island

Charter public schools in the state are generally performing well, according to the Rhode Island Department of Education’s report “The State of Rhode Island’s Public Schools” released this month.

“There is still work we need to do to ensure that all of our charter public schools are examples of excellence, but there is no doubt that our charters serve a vital function, which we see each year when the schools receive approximately 11 applications for each opening,” Commissioner Deborah Gist wrote in the introduction to the report.

Unemployment down in RI but still highest in U.S.

Rhode Island continues to have the highest unemployment rate in the country, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures released last week.

The Ocean State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.7 percent in March.

The next highest rates of unemployment were 8.5 percent in Nevada and Illinois. North Dakota again had the lowest jobless rate at 2.6 percent.

Bill would place referendum for public safety building on ballot

STATE HOUSE – The House Committee on Finance will consider a bill April 29 to authorize the town of Narragansett to finance the improvement of the town’s public safety building.

The bill, introduced by Reps. Teresa Tanzi (D-Dist. 34, South Kingstown, Narragansett) and Donald J. Lally Jr. (D-Dist. 33 Narragansett, South Kingstown) would authorize the town to issue not more than $2 million in bonds for the project, if approved.

Council approves beer and wine sales for Aunt Carrie’s

NARRAGANSETT – Aunt Carrie’s will soon be serving beer and wine.

On Monday, the town council granted a Class BV-Limited liquor license to Aunt Carrie’s Inc., located at 1240 Ocean Road.

Elsie Foy, owner of Aunt Carrie’s, previously told the zoning board that Aunt Carrie’s needs the liquor license in order to compete with nearby establishments that serve alcohol such as Bon Vue Inn/Hammerhead Grille, Narragansett Grill and Charlie O’s.

Town approves settlement between PUC, United Water

April 23, 2014

NARRAGANSETT – The town council voted 4-0 Monday to approve and join in the settlement agreement that has been negotiated between United Water Rhode island and the Rhode Island Division of Public Utilities and Carriers.

Councilor Glenna Hagopian was absent.
