SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Prout School graduated 146 seniors Tuesday at the University of Rhode Island’s Ryan Center.
The Class of 2013 received their diplomas at the school’s 45th graduation ceremony, which marked the bittersweet end of their four years at the Catholic school.

PROVIDENCE—Rep. Larry Valencia (Dist. 39—Richmond, Exeter, Hopkinton) presented the latest version of House Bill 6160 to the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, legislation which would remove the town clerk in Exeter from being responsible for approving concealed weapons permits to residents.

EAST GREENWICH — Relief. Anxiousness. Excitement. Bittersweet feelings. Optimism.
There are many emotions and senses that seniors experience in the waning days and weeks of their high-school careers leading up to when they make that long walk, dressed in the traditional cap and gown, to receive their much-deserved diplomas.
Those same emotions are swimming through the minds of valedictorian Christina Lusi, salutatorian Jack Payette and their fellow friends and classmates whom make up the East Greenwich High School Class of 2013, which will share the bright spotlights hanging down from the rafters at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence on Sunday.

Deborah Gist can add the Town of East Greenwich to her list of supporters in her pursuit of hoping to remain Commissioner of the State’s Department of Education.
In a letter dated May 28 that was co-signed by Town Council President Michael Isaacs and fellow Councilmen Michael Kiernan, Jeffrey Cianciolo, Brad Bishop and Mark Gee, the Town Council is urging the Board of Education and Chairwoman Eva Marie Mancuso to renew the contract of Commissioner Gist.

CHARLESTOWN – Charlestown voters approved a nearly $29.6 million budget for fiscal 2014 Monday.
While only 238 of the town’s 6,150 registered voters turned out to vote, of the 238, 146 voted yes on the budget and 92 voted no, Town Clerk Amy Rose Weinreich confirmed Tuesday.
The newly passed budget will raise the property tax rate by 16 cents from $9.30 to $9.46 per $1,000 of assessed value.

HOPE VALLEY— Teacher Denise Foggo’s fourth grade class really digs gardening. Her students plant and raise vegetables like beans, peppers and cucumbers, which they donate to the First Baptist Church for distribution to local food shelters.
“It’s right from cleaning the beds, tilling the soil, everything from planting to watering. The kids like coming out and they know they’re doing a service for the community,” said Foggo.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority is proposing service changes to its entire operational system, to be implemented over the next two years.
RIPTA held two public hearings Monday at the South Kingstown Town Hall, two of 12 such sessions scheduled in all of the state’s five counties, as required by law when there are significant changes service.

NARRAGANSETT- The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and UnitedHealthcare sponsored the 2013 Ocean State Tour de Cure Sunday to benefit diabetes research, education and advocacy. More than 550 riders participated in the Ocean State ride and ADA exceeded the fundraising goal of $240,000, raising more than $250,000.
