Council approves Whalerock purchase

CHARLESTOWN — Last Thursday, the Charlestown Town Council voted in favor of a resolution to acquire a 75-acre property known as “Whalerock” and to keep it as open space. With more than 150 residents attending the hearing held at Charlestown Elementary School, there was strong public support for the purchase.

Town Council President Thomas Gentz presented a detailed slide show of the sales agreement that included maps of the site located north of Route One between King’s Factory Road and East Quail Run.

After settlement, Charlestown declared an aggrieved party in Whalerock case

CHARLESTOWN – Despite the fact that the Whalerock case was settled Thursday with the town’s purchase of the property on King’s Factory Road, a Superior Court judge filed a ruling Friday stating that the town of Charlestown is an aggrieved party in the case.

Fire destroys home on Columbia Street

August 29, 2013

Update: The Rhode Island State Fire Marshal's office said Thursday that the fire was determined to be accidental, caused by the "improper disposal of smoking materials."

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – A fire destroyed the upper two floors of a home on Columbia Street Saturday afternoon.

According to Union Fire District Chief Robert Perry, crews were called to 25 Columbia St. at 3:37 p.m. Upon arrival, Perry said they found the second and third floor attic engulfed in flame with heavy black smoke emanating from the structure.

CRMC affirms denial of Champlin’s Marina BI expansion

NARRAGANSETT — Champlin’s Marina on Block Island lost its second round with the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC), when the council upheld its 2011 decision Monday to deny Champlin’s application for docking expansion.

Zoning board grants permission for Lamoureux to move Ocean Road home

NARRAGANSETT- The Narragansett Zoning Board recently granted permission to the owner of an Ocean Road home, built in error on the neighboring property, to move the home to its proper location.

Following a public hearing in May and decision approving the move in June, the zoning board sent notification dated Aug. 14 to Robert Lamoureux, the owner of 1440 Ocean Road, indicating that he would be permitted to move the home pending Coastal Resources Management Council approval.

Morris resigns from SK school committee

August 22, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – South Kingstown School member Liz Morris officially resigned Tuesday.

Morris, who was absent at Tuesday’s meeting, sent a letter of resignation, dated Aug. 9, to the committee stating that she would be moving out of state.

Maureen Cotter, committee chair, read the letter aloud during the meeting.

Hearing tonight on Whalerock land

CHARLESTOWN - The Charlestown Town Council will hold a public hearing tonight regarding the potential purchase of the 78 acres, known as the Whalerock property, to use as open space.

Developer Larry LeBlanc was in the midst of a public hearing before the Charlestown Zoning Board for permission to erect two 410-foot wind turbines on the site.

The zoning board hearing was stalled once the town began pursuing an option to purchase the property.

The hearing regarding purchasing the property will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at Charlestown Elementary School.
