SK schools want to increase preschool access

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The South Kingstown School District is attempting to increase access to preschool for all children in town.
The South Kingstown School Committee received an update on the town’s integrated preschool at last week’s school committee meeting.
Coleen Smith, early childhood coordinator for the district, and Christine Levy, assistant pupil personnel coordinator, spoke about the district’s initiatives to provide access to preschool for all school-aged children, which began in fall 2012.

Local musicians featured on AMC’s ‘Showville’

NARRAGANSETT – Two local musicians will be featured on a new AMC reality show, “Showville,” which premiered Thursday.
Aspiring musicians Connor Fisher and Hannah Gang were one of four acts selected for the finals of the show, formerly called “Road Show,” when they auditioned in December.

Open meetings law complaint rejected

PROVIDENCE—Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin’s Office issued its decision Monday regarding North Kingstown School Committee member William Mudge’s September 2012 complaint that his colleagues violated open meetings laws (OMA) when calling an Aug. 27, 2012 emergency meeting. The gathering to address committee members about the pending strike of the school’s Educational Support Union (NKESP), alleges Mudge, was unnecessary and a violation of the OMA, a point which the Attorney General’s Office’s rejects.

DMS breaking and entering suspect caught

NORTH KINGSTOWN—The suspect observed breaking into Davisville Middle School last week was apprehended this past Friday after days of investigation by the North Kingstown Police Department. Joseph Scott Howell, 27, of 116 West Allenton Road, North Kingstown, was arrested after he was positively identified with surveillance cameras.

Finance Committee shares recommendations

EAST GREENWICH — June Fisher, the head of the East Greenwich School District Finance Committee, gave the School Committee a formal outline of recommendations regarding the 2014 fiscal budget process during the School Committee’s meeting Tuesday night at Cole Middle School.
The recommendations brought forth by Fisher on behalf of the Finance Committee were divided into two categories – budgeting process and budget planning – to which Fisher said are essential to the goal of developing and presenting a “well-vetted, logical and transparent budget.”

Road race memorializes Tom Cavanagh

EAST GREENWICH – The Cavanagh family, people of faith, does not have to look very far for the signs.
At Thomas Cavanagh’s wake three years ago, two rainbows appeared in a frigid January sky, one inverted like a smile.
And on Saturday, the two winners of the inaugural Cavanagh Scholarship Run – male and female – each wore the Number 9, the former hockey great’s uniform number from his time on the ice in the American Hockey League and the number of siblings in the Cavanagh household.
Chance?
The family – Tom’s four brothers and four sisters – think not.

The best is yet to come for URI Class of 2013 graduates

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — This year the University of Rhode Island held its 127th commencement exercises in the Ryan Center instead of outdoors. While the move was intended to increase security around the event, the class of 2013 also avoided a soggy afternoon outside. In all, 3,200 undergraduates and nearly 800 graduate students received their degrees in commencement ceremonies over the course of the weekend.
