NARRAGANSETT—Town officials met with representatives from Horsley Witten Group, a professional and environmental services firm based in Massachusetts who was hired by the town in January to conduct the update of its Comprehensive Plan. The current Plan, drafted in 1999, details information about the town, such as housing and open-space development, land-use, and economic development, which have a direct impact on decision-making in Narragansett.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The North Kingstown Planning Commission engaged in a lengthy discussion Tuesday evening regarding a comprehensive plan amendment that was denied by the Statewide Planning Program that dealt with the Schartner Farms property.
The discussion centered around a March 26 letter from the planning program to the NK Planning Department explaining the denial. The piece of property was originally zoned village-residential and the town changed it to commercial in 2007, which was reflected in the future land use map and zoning ordinance.

EXETER – As the owner of two large dogs including an adopted Rottweiler-mix, Stephen P. “Steve” Mattscheck has a soft spot for animals. He’s also connected to the Exeter Animal Shelter, adjacent to the Department of Public Works (DPW), which he now directs.
“I helped build the facility,” he says of the shelter. “Public Works is already responsible for all the public buildings and grounds and we’ve worked there – replacing windows and doors, making repairs; it was all done in-house.”

NORTH KINGSTOWN – A North Kingstown resident was arrested early last Thursday morning, along with a New York man, in connection with a $20 million Medicaid fraud scheme.
Gary F. Anusavice, 59, of 229 Potter Road, North Kingstown, also known as “Gary Andrews,” “Gary Andrus” and “Gary Francis,” was arrested at his home on a federal criminal complaint charging him with conspiring to commit health care fraud and making false statements involving federal health care programs.

NORTH KINGSTOWN—From the moment the North Kingstown Town Council passed a highly controversial ordinance forcibly implementing a three-platoon system where town firefighters would work 24-hour shifts every three days, members from both the council and the fire union, North Kingstown Firefighters Association, Local 1651, IAFF, argued that the battle was inevitably heading to court.
