EXETER â When Team Phoenix, a group of four student chefs in the Exeter Job Corps Academyâs culinary arts program, needed to choose a captain for a prestigious cooking contest held Feb. 16 at the Radisson Hotel, in Warwick, there was only one contender.
âWe looked at Cassie and picked her as team leader,â recalls Krystal Strait, of the unanimous selection of Cassie-Lee Joseph.
âItâs her attitude,â explains Gary Braun. âThereâs no bull.â

NARRAGANSETTâThe Capital Reserve Committee met for the first time Wednesday evening to discuss a number of upcoming capital projects for the schools. The group comprises School Committee and Town Council members, as well as various town staff and two members of the public, and has been formed in order to better implement funding strategies for capital projects.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN â Former University of Rhode Island President Robert Carothers says he âhas been on the fence for six monthsâ and is not ready to decide whether he will take the retirement buyout.
âIâm trying to decide whatâs best for me, my family and the university,â Carothers says. âMy family does not think I should retire.â
However, there are conflicting reports on whether Carothers can even accept the retirement program at this point â 40 percent of a final salary - since the deadline on March 19 expired.

NORTH KINGSTOWN â Two local residents have been charged for their roles in a tragic accident in East Greenwich that took the lives of two North Kingstown teenagers last month.
Nicolas Whiteley, 21, of North Kingstown, faces two charges of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol-death resulting, two counts of driving to endanger-death resulting and driving to endanger-resulting in injury.

University of Rhode Island Campus Police arrested Jonathan Holton today, March 29 at about 8 a.m. on a warrant issued yesterday by the Miami-Dade Police on a charge of robbery according to a statement from URI.
This is Holtonâs second arrest this week.
Listed as a freshman student earlier this week, Holton is no longer registered at the University.

NARRAGANSETTâThe Town Council held a Show-Cause hearing Monday evening to address multiple liquor license violations committed by Clam Jammers, a restaurant and bar at 294 Great Island Road in Galilee. Owner Paul Troxell was on hand to accept an agreement reached after a number of consultations with Narragansett Police Chief Dean Hoxsie and Narragansett Fire Marshal James Given.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN â University of Rhode Island President David M. Dooley is not thinking about the new menâs basketball coach Dan Hurley or the state investigation into the Institute for International Sport. His main thought is how tuition costs are rising â a factor he blames on declining state support.
âThe costs are shifting from taxpayers in the state to families â a much smaller base,â Dooley states.
