Updates: School pushed back to Tuesday; Summer's End still on

The East Greenwich School District's 2011-12 opening has once again been postponed as power outages and other problems created by Hurricane Irene continue to plague the system.
Opening day has now been pushed back to Tuesday, Sept. 6, the third time it has been pushed back a day this week. Kindergarten orientation will also be held that day, with the first day of kindergarten classes now scheduled for Wednesday. Freshman orientation at East Greenwich High School has been postponed indefinitely.

Breaking News: South Kingstown Schools has been canceled for Thursday, Sept. 1

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - School in South Kingstown has been canceled for tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 1. The first day of school will be Tuesday, Sept. 6. The original first day of school was scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 30, but has been postponed due to low hanging wires remaining in several areas of the town after Tropical Storm Irene hit Rhode Island Sunday.

Curmudgeon's Corner: Schartner ran into an entrenched bureaucracy

On August 16th, I was among the attendees at a presentation by “Rit” Schartner at the former Bald Hill Nursuries headquarters at which Mr. Schartner passed out a three-page timeline fact sheet describing the financial dilemma he and his family find themselves in.
Their problems began with the August 2005 purchase for $7.4 million of the 140-acre Bald Hill Nursery property on the corner of Routes 2 and 102. One hundred twenty acres of the site lie in Exeter.

Cleanup continues; school opening delayed

(This story has been updated to reflect postponement of school opening to Friday.)

While East Greenwich cleans up after Hurricane Irene and residents slowly regain power, school vacation has been extended yet another day.
School opening has been pushed back a second day to Friday, but as of Tuesday afternoon, several of the town's schools did not have power back, including East Greenwich High School. The School Department's Peirce Street offices were closed and its main 885-3300 number was not operative Tuesday afternoon.

Breaking News: South Kingstown Schools cancelled Wednesday, Aug. 31.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - The first day of school for South Kingstown Schools is cancelled for tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 31 due to low hanging wires remaining in several areas of the town. School officials say they want to transport students safely. The original start date for schools was Monday, Aug. 29, but it was postponed until Tuesday, Aug. 30 due to Hurricane Irene.

The Times will keep you informed as to when school will start.
