SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Fournier Estates, apartment complex on High Street was deemed uninhabitable after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon and displaced four families.
At 1:38 p.m., Sunday, units from the Union Fire District, the Emergency Medical Services and police responded to the fire on 480 High Street, where flames engulfed Apartment A2 and damaged Apartments A1, A3 and A4. The fire was extinguished by 1:55 p.m.. Union Fire District Chief Robert Perry said between 45 to 50 firefighters from all of the fire units, including Peace Dale, Wakefield, Forestry and West Kingston responded with the state fire marshall arriving too.
WOOD RIVER JCT. -- Taxpayers in the Chariho Regional School District's three towns of Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton approved the proposed $54.31 million budget on a vote of 494-288.
The Westerly Community Credit Union is sponsoring three scholarships for local area high schools: Chariho, Exeter-West Greenwich, Narragansett, South Kingstown, Stonington and Westerly. Two scholarships are for the amount of $2500 and one is for $500.
