WEST GREENWICH—As Exeter-West Greenwich High School Principal Brian Butler walked through the halls of his school last fall during the week of testing for the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP), he noticed something was a little bit different.
His students, who had one year earlier struggled to reach proficiency levels in reading, math and writing, were taking right up to the final minute to finish the tests and, from that observation alone, Butler could tell they were taking it more seriously than they had in prior years.
This January marked Bill and Pauline Anderson Strozier’s 62nd wedding anniversary.
The Coventry couple was married on January 15th, 1949 at a Lutheran Church in Providence. Bill was 25 and Pauline was 23. Today, Bill is 87 and Pauline is 85, but the couple said it seems like just yesterday that they met.
They talked about the day in great detail. Pauline said that her father brought Bill home with him on February 8th, 1948.
SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Town taxpayers had much on their minds at Monday night's town council meeting, expressing their disappointment in snow removal along streets in the town and also their hope for the reopening of the Dugway Road Bridge.
While East Greenwich schools could not boast increases across the board, the October 2010 New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) test scores continue to rank local students among the state’s best.
In proficiency test results in reading, math and writing for students in Grades 3 through 8 and 11, released last week by the state Department of Education, East Greenwich consistently performed well above the state average, even when scores dropped from last year’s figures.
“There’s some encouraging progress, but there are still things we need to work on,” said school Superintendent Victor Mercurio.

It’s mid-February and you know what that means: Love is in the air.
As North Kingstown and Exeter celebrated Valentine’s Day this week, it’s only fitting the day spill over onto the pages of the Standard Times.
This week’s Standard Times features a fun story by Martha Smith on how love has changed the lives of a handful of senior citizens from North Kingstown. In addition, we’ve got photos from the big day in NK as local children put together hand-made Valentine’s Day cards for their loved ones.
NARRAGANSETT – South County will become more energy efficient with the $240,000 in funding the Attorney General Patrick F. Kilmartin directed for the completion of the 100 kilowatt wind turbine at Fisherman's Memorial State Campground and the construction of a wind turbine at the East Matunuck State Beach facility.
PROVIDENCE–During the fast-paced lame duck session which saw the end of the Democratic Party's control of the House, climate change legislation which would have curbed industrial greenhouse gas emissions across the economy was squashed. As recently as Tuesday a climate change denier from Oklahoma, Senator Inhofe, and the former head of the Environmental Protection Agency squared off at the Republican-led EPA hearings. But while Congress debates, the science is in, carbon is rising, and the clock is ticking. Town planning departments across the state map flood zones and develop strategies for withstanding future floods which result from a changing climate. Meanwhile, undergraduate and graduate students at Brown's Center for Environmental Studies are working to analyze local events including past floods and are developing strategies for a sustainable environment.
