A ride along with South Kingstown's finest

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - We were sitting in a police car speeding down Route 138 along Kingstown Road with no one to stop us. We drove 80 miles per hour, trying to catch up to those who thought they could be faster. It was the first time I sat in a cop car. However, I didn't break the law and wasn't guilty. I was doing my first cop ride-along with Officer Michael Bronson of the South Kingstown Police last Friday night.

Meet Mike Samuelson, the face of male breast cancer

Michael Samuelson recalls appearing on a panel when a fellow speaker turned to him and asked, “Did you ever think you’d be onstage for breast cancer standing next to a man with prostate cancer?”
“The fact that a man can have breast cancer was my Aha! moment,” says Samuelson. “I’m a guy with a woman’s cancer.”

NK School Committee decision on Foley upheld

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Rhode Island Department of Education Commissioner, Deborah Gist, announced Friday that she’s upholding the Feb. 9, 2010 decision of the North Kingstown School Committee that placed former high school principal Gerald Foley, on a 30 day unpaid “indefinite disciplinary suspension”, despite his exemplary service to the district for the past 21 years.

Breast Cancer fire truck comes to town

NORTH KINGSTOWN –According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. This year alone, an estimated 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed. October is breast cancer awareness month and members of the North Kingstown Fire Fighters Association have been doing their part in the fight against cancer by wearing pink uniform shirts this past week.

ACLU challenges N.K.’s political sign ordinance

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Last Wednesday, Rhode Island ACLU volunteer attorney Richard Sinapi filed a federal lawsuit against the town challenging the town’s ordinance that “discriminatorily” limits the posting of political signs in town.
