SOUTH KINGSTOWN – After detailing the budget for municipal services, police, open space and parks and recreation, the town council and the school committee finally met last Thursday to hash out the details of the school budget in a public hearing as proposed in town manager Stephen A. Alfred’s six-year capital improvement plan.

Dr. John Walsh hangs up the stethoscope at age 89

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – As the first board-certified surgeon at South County Hospital, Dr. John J. Walsh is one of few who witnessed and experienced the changes at the hospital from when it grew from a 46 bed, single building to a 100-bed acute-care facility. Yet after 57 years at South County, spanning six decades, Walsh, an emergency room physician has retired at age 89 this past Dec. 31.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The daffodil is the first flower of spring, letting us know that life re-emerges after very harsh treatment through the dead of winter.
Such evident symbolism has been the decades-old landmark of the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days, which recruit volunteers now through March when these flowers spring to life.

A school bus carrying 25 children and a passenger vehicle collided in North Kingstown this afternoon.
There was a report of one injury in the accident and the children themselves were transferred to another bus.

Stringfellow discusses tiered diploma system in advance of Gist visit

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Department of Education is upping its standards again for graduating students to receive a high school diploma, placing more emphasis on NECAP scores while developing differential diplomas. With the Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist coming to the South Kingstown High School Wednesday, Jan. 19 to hold a public hearing on changes to the graduation requirements for the classes of 2012 and beyond, the town’s school committee focused on these changes at Tuesday night’s meeting.
