Narragansett faces budget challenges

NARRAGANSETT—Town Manager Grady Miller presented the proposed FY 2012-13 operating and capital budget on Monday evening to the Town Council, highlighting a number of expenses and potential challenges, including Other Post Employment Benefits (OPEB) costs and funding new capital projects. Monday night was the first of two public hearings on the town budget, and the Town Council will hold workshops throughout this week to address their concerns, which are open to the public.

It’s official: Iacoi’s tenure with SRI Chamber is over

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – In a one-sentence press release, the Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce announced Monday morning that Joseph J. Iacoi will no longer serve as executive director.

“The Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce and Joseph J. Iacoi wish to announce the conclusion to Joe’s work at the Chamber and each extends the other best wishes for success in the future,” the statement read.

Preview today's Narragansett Times

In today's paper, the Narragansett Town Council votes unanimously to support Governor Lincoln Chafee’s municipal pension package.

Narragansett Town Manager also presented the proposed $51.4 million for FY 2012-2013. This is an increase of $803,432 from the current fiscal budget.

Also, Joe Iacoi, the executive director of the Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, has officially resigned from his position.

South Kingstown resident Deborah Bergner also questions a set of new ground rules at the town council chambers.

New owners hope to get Morning Star Horse Farm back on track

SAUNDERSTOWN – Located off Route 1 is 57 acres of pristine landscaping where horse lovers can come and observe the four-legged animals and learn how to ride them.
Formally Freedom Horse Farm, the property has now been taken over by new owners who are feverishly working to erase the past and bring a positive outlook to the once ragged land.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Thomas Kutcher stands in the shimmering sunlight of a very warm spring afternoon, inhaling the distinctly fishy aroma of work boats tied up at the Town Dock, at the end of Main Street.
It is like sweet perfume to this man who has found his greatest delights growing up on Narragansett Bay, specifically the Warren River; he became an accomplished surfer – his favorite spots were off Bonnet Shores and Narragansett Pier – swimmer and boater.

Tell Me Your Story: Denhoff runs Marathon as tribute to cancer patients

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Erica Denhoff chose the hottest Boston Marathon in history to make her running debut – and lived to tell the tale.
While people all around her were falling by the wayside – even last year’s male and female winners dropped out – the pint-size former NKHS athlete kept going.
She finished in six hours, 16 minutes and four seconds.
