KINGSTON â Whether or not the University of Rhode Island menâs basketball team deserved to beat Charlotte Saturday afternoon is irrelevant.
It didnât matter how it looked, because when the Rams left the Ryan Center, the scoreboard read Rams 71, Guest 70.
Akeem Richmond missed a jumper from the right corner with three seconds left in overtime, but Jamal Wilson was in the right place at the right time â and got away with the right move â for a putback just before the buzzer in overtime, giving the Rams the dramatic one-point win to finish off an incredible second half for URI.
Amongst a slew of other issues, one of the biggest problems facing Rhode Island is its inability to entice its young people to remain in the state.
SOUTH KINGSTOWN â To close the $1.6 million deficit in the school budget, the School Committee approved a budget that would ask for two percent in town property taxes, $950,000 from collective bargaining agreements and a reduction of $640,184 in school programs and structures with 33 percent of the un-designated fund balance dedicated to the budget.
KINGSTON--When South African writer Nadine Gordimer was asked what was the best compliment she had ever been paid she said, "Years and years ago, when I was on a camping trip on a farm, I was bitten by ticks that had brushed off the long grass I'd been walking through. When I complained of this, the old and very unattractive farmer said, 'If I was a tick, I'd also like to bite you.'"

Only in America, check that, only in Rhode Island, can a PhD from Harvard named Sarah Doom start a womanâs Roller Derby League, then get her degree and legitimately be called Dr. Doom.
Only in Rhode Island can you meet dental hygienists who help relief tooth pain by day, only to knock out teeth at night, as skaters in the Providence Roller Derby.
And only this Saturday, Feb. 12, can you meet these delicate bruisers. Thatâs the date that marks the Derby Sweet Heart Skate, where Roller Derby queens become self-professed âgiraffes on iceâ as they skate in an entirely different medium â frozen water â at the Bank of America Rink at Kennedy Plaza.
Warm up to the impending 2011 Providence Roller Derby season by meeting the skaters from 5 to 8 p.m. While it is still cold out, these ladies want to test their skills by trading in wheels for blades.
There will be a heated tent with Providence Roller Derby merchandise for sale, a photo booth to have your picture taken with your favorite derby girl, hot chocolate and cider, and a station to decorate your own valentine cupcake or cookie.
Or maybe even yourself.
