Lacrosse team off to good start

April 25, 2013

COVENTRY — In its first year of varsity competition this Coventry lacrosse team was just happy to win a playoff game and reach the Division III semifinals.
This season, simply making the playoffs isn’t the goal for a team with plenty of lacrosse experience. The Oakers, behind the attack play of Ethan Tryhubczak and Alex Izzi, the middie play of Zach Allen and Jake Harrington and the goalkeeping of Kyle Marquis have bigger goals in 2013.

Knights put up fight vs. Oakers

WEST GREENWICH — The result was predictable. The road to the result wasn’t.
The undefeated Coventry volleyball team traveled just a few miles down Route 3 to face winless Exeter-West Greenwich Tuesday night. The Oakers had lost just three games this season, while the very inexperienced Scarlet Knights had won just two games.
Coventry returned home with its perfect record still intact after a sweep, but the Oakers were forced to work a little harder than they wanted to in a 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 victory over the Knights.

Gallagher homers twice in victory

PROVIDENCE — Coventry senior third baseman Kristin Gallagher had the best game of her high-school career to lead the Coventry softball team to a 15-7 Division I road victory over La Salle Monday afternoon.
Gallagher went 5-for-5 with two home runs, a triple, a double and a single while teammates Amanda Ritarossi, Alyssa Derrick and freshman Kaitlin Mattera added home runs in the win.

Slow starts hinders Covnetry

COVENTRY — From the second inning through the sixth inning of Wednesday’s Division I-South home game against Middletown, Coventry senior pitcher Justin Jadach allowed just two hits, one walk and one unearned run.
The first inning? That’s something Jadach and the Oakers would like to forget about.
The Islanders took advantage of walks to lead-off hitter Justin Sellar and No. 2 hitter Justin Sullivan to explode for five runs in the opening frame. Senior Spencer Gradley punctuated the inning with a three-run home run to left field to lead the visitors to a 7-4 victory.

Frustraion sets in for Chargers lax

CRANSTON – The bar may not have been set very high for the Chariho boys lacrosse team in their inaugural season when it came to the numbers in the win-loss column, but that is not to say there is not a level of expectation put upon the players every time they step on the field.
The team may not have won a game in its first four tries this season but each time the Chargers took the field there was noticeable improvement, particularly on offense.
Chariho seemed to take a step back on Saturday afternoon, however, when they dropped a 10-3 decision to Cranston West at Cranston Stadium.

Rhody sweeps Temple

April 25, 2013

KINGSTON–The University of Rhode Island baseball team had an impressive weekend series at Bill Beck Memorial Field, sweeping Temple University to continue rolling in their Atlantic 10 Conference schedule.
Currently fourth place in the A-10, URI extended its winning streak to seven games after a sweep of Fordham University last weekend and a non-league victory over Boston College Tuesday prior to this weekend’s series with Temple
All weekend the Owls struggled against Rhody’s pitching as the Rams kept their opposition off balance throughout the series.

Record setting day for Chariho

April 25, 2013

HARRISVILLE—Few players have left their mark on the Chariho girls lacrosse program like seniors Hannah Baker and Mattie Russell.
Now the record books will show just that.
Friday the seniors scored seven goals apiece in a 25-11 rout of the Burillville-North Smithfield Co-op to break the team record for most goals in one game.
“When we played Westerly [April 8] I got six goals and we had no idea during the whole game that it tied the record,” Russell said. “We were like, ‘oh, we could have gotten the record! But we’ll get them next time.’
