NARRAGANSETT – Each summer since 2008 Denis and Anne Martin have welcomed a child from Brooklyn, N.Y. as a part of the Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency that offers inner-city kids the joy of summer vacation
Since 1877, the Fresh Air Fund has provided free summer experiences in the country to more than 1.7 million New York City children from disadvantaged communities. Each year, thousands of children visit volunteer host families in 13 states and Canada through the friendly town program or attend Fresh Air Fund camps. Children are selected to participate in the Fresh Air Fund’s programs based on financial need. Fresh Air youngsters are registered by more than 90 social service and community organizations in all five boroughs of New York City.
WOOD RIVER JCT. – If you pick up a 30-pack of beer in the next few days or so, you might see an unfamiliar sticker attached to the package bearing the text, “Help prevent underage drinking. Out of their hands... Know the law! It is illegal to purchase or provide alcohol for anyone under 21!”
CHARLESTOWN–Next time you shuck a shell at an icy oyster bar, make sure you ask where the leftovers are being dumped. Rhode Island's Nature Conservancy has received $46,000 in funds to recycle shells and restore the oyster population off of Charlestown's water. Your discarded bivalve can help.
SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The town council and school committee met Monday night for the start of the budget talks, where they hashed out the details and held a public discussion. The meeting was held to solicit comments from the public relating to the goals and objectives of the development of the 2011 to 2012 municipal and school budgets.

Christmas means different things to different people but the one thing most people can agree on is it's a time for love.
This week's Standard Times features a nice reminder of that as a pair of local senior citizens spent the weekend before Christmas pledging their love to another in the holy ceremony of marriage.
NARRAGANSETT -- When a field of tubeworms was unexpectedly discovered on the side of a large underwater mountain 50 miles off the coast of Cyprus this summer, the finding was notable both for the discovery itself and for the process of the discovery.
NARRAGANSETT–The Galilee Advisory Committee elected new leadership at Tuesday's meeting. Kevin Kosko was elected Chairman, Bill Shepard was elected Vice Chairman, and Barry Keinard was elected secretary.

How do you sum up a year of news, sports and entertainment in a 12-page special section?
Do you try to pinpoint the stories that had the most impact? The pictures that left you feeling amazed? The moments that will stay with you for years to come?
No matter the methodology, chances are you’re going to forget something groundbreaking, something left your community astonished or changed forever, or a story that simply seems too big to leave off the list.
There is no good way to do it … but it’s a task that must be done, both to honor the year for what it was and for what it represents.
