The first fruits of the projected $6.2 million surplus on the 2008 school bond will be directed to a pair of roofs if the School Committee has its way.
The committee voted unanimously last week to request permission from the Town Council to appropriate $1,813,500 for roof replacement work at East Greenwich High School and $225,000 for roof repairs at Frenchtown Elementary School.

North Kingstown School Committee member Larry Ceresi will join Melvoid Benson and Town Council member Charles Brennan in resigning from the North Kingstown Democratic Town Committee next week.

WAKEFIELD â Although bookstore locals will lament the loss of Waldenbooks, which will close Jan. 22 after 31 years of service at the Wakefield Mall, they can breathe a sigh of relief as Wakefield Books will likely take its place.
Waldenbooks began its closing store sale after its employees were notified of the closing. Borders, the company that owns Waldenbooks, did not renew the storeâs lease at the mall.
As the bookstore, known for its customer-friendly employees, featured huge sales just before the holidays, some customers were saddened by the news of its closing.

The Standard Times has learned, exclusively, that longtime North Kingstown School Committee member Melvoid Benson and recently-elected Town Council member Charles Brennan have both resigned from the North Kingstown Democratic Town Committee.
Benson, who was elected in 2004, is halfway through her second term on the School Committee while Brennan, who finished fourth overall in the November elections, was just sworn in to the Town Council three weeks ago.

WAKEFIELDâThree barbers at Jordanâs New Style snip, clip, and chat on Wakefieldâs Main Street.
The previous barbershop relocated after a flood destroyed what had been a cozy basement spot filled with pool tables and the usual haircut mischief. The shopâs owners decided not to sign a new lease and instead moved to a new spot on Columbia Street.
They left but the barber pole stayed.
Adam Lavelle, 19, grew up in the Chariho region and learned to cut hair with his friends. Heâll buzz skulls, trim chin spinach, and give you a âfreshy.â But donât be frightened, parents; that is just Adamâs slang for trimming your neck hair. By his senior year of high school he knew it is what he wanted to do with life.
