NFIP reform may impact coastal residents

NARRAGANSETT – Reforms to the National Flood Insurance Program may soon begin to affect property owners throughout the state.
Changes to the program were discussed at a stakeholder meeting Wednesday for those involved and interested in the Coastal Resources Management Council and Rhode Island Sea Grant Shoreline Change Special Area Management Plan (Beach SAMP).

‘Miss Rhody’ a popular draw at Exeter ice cream shop

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Taking a stop by the Oak Harbour Village Shopping Center off South County Trail in Exeter, one will see a unique monument standing in front of the newly established Kiki’s Udderly Cool Ice Cream Shop; a painted cow. The bovine statue has been a giant topic of conversation for customers, and owner Michelle Fabricant is excited to see people enjoying both the ice cream and the cow’s detailed painted body.

URI Master Gardeners hosting tour

NARRAGANSETT- The University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners Association will be hosting Rhode Island’s only statewide garden tour on Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14. The rain or shine tour will include 35 private and public gardens that have been maintained by master gardeners and will be opened from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

A unique tourist visits on Fourth of July

NORTH KINGSTOWN—North Kingstown received a different kind of tourist on July 4 when a Risso dolphin showed up in the waters of Hamilton Cove, The dolphin, which typically travels nearer to the continental shelf, was spotted by Harbormaster Ed Hughes.

Business plans new ferry to Block Island

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Block Island may be the destination for a new fast ferry this summer, and its departure point will come from farther afield than Galilee or Newport. Rhode Island Fast Ferry announced last week that it would be launching a new route between Quonset and Block Island, scheduled to begin operating as early as next summer.

Suspects in home invasion arrested

July 12, 2013

WEST GREENWICH— Four men have been arrested by Rhode Island State and West Greenwich Police departments in connection to a home invasion in West Greenwich last Sunday.
According to Col. Steven O’Donnell, superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, and West Greenwich Police Chief Richard Ramsay, on June 30, a home located on Mishnock Road was broken into during the early morning.

New faces at the 2013 Wickford Art Festival

NORTH KINGSTOWN—The Wickford Art Festival, one of the most iconic artistic events in the state, is starting up once more this weekend. According to new Festival Director Bruce Luscombe, a handful of newcomers will be joining the already populous ranks of artists for the 2013 edition.
