Hope Valley Farmers Market to hold fundrasing benefit

Members of the Hope Valley Indoor Winter Farmers Market (HVIWFM) have partnered up with individuals in the local farm community to help rebuild the Travis Family Farm. On March 10, the barn at Travis Family Farm burned to the ground, killing more than 50 animals inside. The Travis family was a vendor at the market with Rachyl’s Goats Milk soap and a variety of handcrafted products. To help the family financially and in spirit, a raffle has been planned.

Barber’s Tomb a symbol of deep regard held for Pine Grove

HOPKINTON – The gathering crowd tightened in around the newly erected structure in Pine Grove Cemetery. The impeccably built concrete tomb contained two sections, separated by double iron doors. The first room, measuring 10 feet by 12 feet with a seven and a half foot high ceiling, and walls fourteen inches thick, was to serve as a receiving vault. The second section, a vestibule ante-room measuring 10 feet by 10 feet with a 10-foot high ornamental steel ceiling containing a cornice and centerpiece would be used for holding funerals during inclement weather.

Connecticut woman in critical condition after crash

HOPKINTON - A Connecticut woman sustained life-threatening injuries when she lost control of her vehicle and it overturned early Tuesday morning on Route 95 south.

At approximately 1 a.m. on March 18, the Rhode Island State Police Hope Valley Barracks received several 911 calls reporting a roll over motor vehicle accident on Route 95 south, north of the Woodville Alton Road overpass in Hopkinton.

Dave’s Coffee moving headquarters to Narragansett

CHARLESTOWN – Dave’s Coffee is planning to open a second location in Providence this spring and to move its headquarters to Narragansett.

“We’re halfway through our construction,” David Lanning Sr., CEO of Dave’s Coffee, said Tuesday. “We’re planning for the end of April, sometime in May to be opened there.”

Lanning said the Providence location on South Main Street will be different from the Charlestown location.

Davis clarifies motivations to change Chariho Act

March 20, 2014

RICHMOND — After listening to the dialogue at last week’s Chariho School Committee meeting, Town Councilor Erick A. Davis reported back to the town council Tuesday night that it appeared that Hopkinton and Charlestown believed that Richmond’s proposed changes to the Chariho Act were based on the potential increase in population from the future Richmond Commons apartment complex that will have approximately 300 units of one or two bedrooms.

Westerly Hospital is in better health

HOPKINTON — After a few difficult years, Westerly Hospital is thriving and several of its board members are spreading the news to the surrounding towns.

At Monday’s town council meeting, Westerly Hospital Chairman of the Board Steve Greene reported on the hospital’s economic health. Also attending was Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital President and CEO and Westerly Hospital CEO Bruce D. Cummings and Westerly Hospital board member Thomas Liguori.

Digital Literacy at NES

March 19, 2014

Renee Hobbs, director of the University of Rhode Island’s Harrington School of Communication and Media, delivered the keynote address at the Narragansett school department’s professional development day last Friday. Hobbs has been involved in a project at Narragansett Elementary School regarding digital literacy and highlighted the project for the entire school district staff.
