Kilmartin, fellow AGs urge retailers to stop selling tobacco

With the health and protection of Rhode Island citizens in mind, Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin joined 27 other attorneys general in urging the nation’s five largest retailers with pharmacies – Rite-Aid, Walmart, Walgreens, Kroger and Safeway – to follow the example set by CVS/Caremark and to cease selling tobacco products at stores throughout the United States.

Lyons indicted on multiple charges including DUI death resulting

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Washington County Grand Jury indicted a Coventry woman Friday charging her with one count of driving under the influence death resulting, one count of driving to endanger death resulting, and three counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Human trafficking on the increase in RI

PROVIDENCE—The underground world of human trafficking is not just a brothel in a third world country or a prostitution ring in some European city, but within many communities throughout the United States. Rhode Island is not immune to sex and forced labor trafficking among its streets, and legislators, law enforcement and advocacy groups are beginning to realize the growing problem.

“Human trafficking is becoming an increasingly troublesome issue for all states, including Rhode Island,” said Amy Kempe, spokesperson for the Office of Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin. “What was once seen as something that ‘couldn’t happen in my community,’ that is just no longer the case.”

Legislators react to Fox resignation

March 26, 2014

PROVIDENCE – The sudden resignation of House Speaker Gordon Fox following a federal and state investigation of his home and his office at the state house left local representatives in a unprecedented position to change the direction of the leadership in the house.

Rep. Spencer Dickinson (D - District 35, South Kingstown) spoke with the Narragansett Times on Monday following a meeting of the house the night prior at the Marriott where the resignation was discussed and the group scrambled to determine who would fill the big red chair overseeing the house floor.

Giancola discusses potential affiliation with Southcoast Health System

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – South County Hospital, the only remaining independent hospital in the state, is considering an affiliation with Southcoast Health System.

Late last month, the board of trustees for the South County Hospital Healthcare System and the South County Hospital Healthcare System Endowment authorized the hospital and the endowment to enter into exclusive talks with Southcoast Health System of Massachusetts regarding a possible affiliation.

School committee considers shortening February vacation

March 26, 2014

NARRAGANSETT – The school committee may consider changing February vacation to a four-day weekend in coming years.

The committee discussed the 2014-2015 school calendar Wednesday, which has a proposed school start date of Aug. 27, 2014 and end date of June 17, 2015.

Superintendent Katherine Sipala said she is awaiting comments from school principals and the teachers’ union on the proposed calendar, and would expect the committee to table the item for a decision at the April meeting.

PUC holds hearings on water rate increase

March 26, 2014

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – A public hearing before the Public Utilities Commission [PUC] brought an estimated 25 residents to the town hall last Wednesday in protest of approximately $10 in proposed monthly increases – a 42.6 percent rate increase - from United Water, which was allowed a 18.31 percent increase in 2012.

The next hearing on the matter will be held at the Narragansett Town Hall tonight at 6 p.m.
