COVENTRY—After watching three strikes go by in his first at-bat 11-year Loren Vaughn wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice at Paine Field Tuesday.
“It’s just that the first time up I was nervous,” the Coventry American center fielder said.
After that it was pretty clear nerves were no longer a factor.
Vaughn hit three home runs in his final three at-bats – including two in the third inning and a grand slam in the fourth – and recorded nine RBI as Coventry National walloped North Kingstown 22-0 in the consolation bracket of the 12-Year Old All-Stars District 3 Tournament.

When training camps open in the fall, South Kingstown native Erik Murphy will be looking to pull off a feat very few Rhode Islanders have; become just the seventh player from the Union’s smallest state – and first from South County – to play in the NBA.
Murphy – along with Providence native Ricky Ledo, the 40th overall pick – will be looking to join the likes of Marvin Barnes, Ernie Calverly, Ernie DiGregorio, Tom Garrick, Joe Hassett and Owen Wells after being selected by the Chicago Bulls in the second round, 49th overall, in last Thursday’s NBA Draft.

Thanks to an eight-run third inning the South Kingstown American 9/10-Year Old All-Stars are in the District 3 Winners Bracket finals.
SK American scored a 16-3 victory in four innings over South Kingstown National Sunday at Tuckertown Park and will now host Warwick Continental Saturday at 10 a.m. with a berth to the district championship on the line.
“When you stay in the winners bracket you get more rest for your pitchers,” American coach Dave Palazzetti said. “It is helpful to get out of the blocks quickly.”

SMITHFIELD—For 81 of Rhode Island’s best high school seniors Saturday’s 2013 Senior All-Star Classic was a chance to lace up the cleats one last time before moving on to the next chapter in their lives.
“It was awesome. I missed it,” Narragansett’s Dillon Sheridan said. “Playing with a whole new group of kids I never had played with before was a good experience.”

Coventry's Garcia Closes out EG

July 3, 2013

COVENTRY — Coventry American 11-year-old Lucas Garcia is getting used to the closer role.
After earning the final two outs in Sunday’s win over Wickford, Garcia entered Tuesday’s District 3 Major Division winners’ bracket semifinal with East Greenwich in the third inning of a tie game.
All Garcia did over the final 3 1/3 innings of his outing was strike out six batters and allow just one run. Offensively, Garcia belted a crucial three-run home run in the fifth inning, while first baseman Anthony Braddock crushed two home runs and delivered four RBIs in a 16-8 victory at Wood St.
