North Kingstown man arrested for selling, delivering heroin

NORTH KINGSTOWN—A 21-year-old North Kingstown man was arrested last Thursday for selling, delivering heroin. Jeffrey Souza, 0f 7825 Post Road, Apt. 206, has been charged with one count each of sale/delivery of heroin, conspiracy, possession of heroin and possession of marijuana.
Souza, who operated with Narragansett resident William Ritzau, 42, was found selling heroin from the Budget Inn on Post Road in North Kingstown.

Former CVS head Ryan donates $15 million to URI

November 22, 2013

KINGSTON—University of Rhode Island President David M. Dooley announced on Thursday the donation of $15 million from former CVS/Caremark CEO Thomas M. Ryan and his wife, Cathy. The money which Ryan, a 1975 graduate from the pharmacy program at URI, has given will be used to establish a new research institute focused on studying neurodegenerative diseases and disorders, such as Alzheimer’s.

Go shell-fish!

PORTSMOUTH—The shore along Town Pond in Portsmouth is thick with mud, enough to clasp down on anyone’s boot and keep it fastened there for a moment. Broken shells litter the beach, and the water’s surface is choppy because of the winds coming off Narragansett Bay. Here is the perfect environment for shellfish cultivation, and as coastal ponds throughout Rhode Island are being utilized for their shellfishing bounty, the public is growing more aware of the ecological and economic benefits of aquaculture to the state.

NK man arrested for child pornography

November 22, 2013

NORTH KINGSTOWN—In conjunction with Coventry Police Department, Rhode Island State Police officers arrested a North Kingstown man for possession of child pornography. Stephen Mulcahey, 41, of 15 Ranger Road, was apprehended last Thursday after an investigation through RISP’s Computer Crimes Unit/Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

Kilmartin tells students ‘It Can Wait’

EAST GREENWICH — R.I. Attorney General Peter Kilmartin still cringes every time he sees the video entitled “The Last Text,” a brief documentary film showing families and people who were profoundly affected from the dangers of texting while driving.
The worst part of R.I. State Police Lt. Eric LaRiviere’s career in law enforcement is notifying family members of a death of a loved one.
It’s those two elements that both Kilmartin and LaRiviere want to dramatically minimize by offering three simple words when it comes to sending messages through a cellphone while behind the wheel.

Coyle ready for brand new challenge

EAST GREENWICH — Even after repeating the words of the town manager’s oath that were uttered to him by The Honorable Daniel A. Procaccini in front of a large crowd at Swift Community Center on Nov. 11, Thomas E. Coyle III’s reaction is still the same as it was when the Town Council told him that he was the man for the job to lead the Town of East Greenwich last month.

Defendants added to school construction suit

November 22, 2013

Two new defendants have been added to the filed lawsuit from 2011 put forth by six homeowners, who reside in three separate properties on Sarah’s Trace, alleging that their abutting homes were damaged from the construction methods used to build the new Cole Middle School.
