Rebels’ defeat a self-inflicted one

October 30, 2013

CRANSTON—It was too much Hyde and not enough Jekyll for the South Kingstown football team Saturday afternoon at Cranston West.
After playing a strong 23 minutes of football things turned ugly for the Rebels (3-3, 1-3 D-I) as they watched a 14-point lead transform into 28-14 defeat at the hands of the Falcons (2-5, 1-4 D-I).

PAWTUCKET – It is said there is a first time for everything.
For the Narragansett girls tennis team, it earned its first ever shot at a state title when it beat Westerly 4-2 last Thursday to advance to the RIIL Division II Championship match Saturday at Slater Park and the Mariners didn’t waste the opportunity.

Focused Avs breeze to finals

PAWTUCKET – After an 11-1 season in 2012, the East Greenwich High School girls tennis team was on track to reach the finals in their first year in Division I. Despite their superiority on paper, however, the Avengers were caught sleeping in the semis and upset by a Mount St. Charles team they had beaten earlier in the season.

PAWTUCKET – Mission complete.
It was a moment months, if not years, in the making. Slowly, methodically, the East Greenwich High School girls tennis team churned their way through their 2013 schedule, laying waste to all who stood in their path. Along the way, the Avengers did what they could to stay focused and grounded, despite their success, all the while building to this one, final crescendo.

Inspired Chargers battled NK to tie

WOOD RIVER JCT. – There’s a strange and intangible collective that often reveals itself in instances like senior night.
Though Chariho and North Kingstown tied 1-1, it was clear to both coaches who had played the better soccer game and an unfamiliar observer may have been hard-pressed to distinguish between the team coming in 9-2 in D-I and the team coming in 2-7-2.

Knights could have bye in first round of D-I playoffs

October 30, 2013

WEST GREENWICH—Exeter-West Greenwich girls soccer coach Kevin Fraser has seen 19 senior days come and go during his tenure coaching the Knights, each one special in their own way.
Few – if any – have had the track record of this season’s senior class though, a group that has gone from winning three Division II Championships in a row to this season thriving amongst the state’s best in Division I.

North put EG away early Friday night

October 30, 2013

EAST GREENWICH – Non-league game or not, there was still much to be gained by both squads as the East Greenwich and North Kingstown football teams met at EG’s Carcieri Field Friday night. The Avengers had been routed on their home turf just one week prior – a 34-0 loss to Moses Brown – while the Skippers themselves were regaining their game.
Two weeks ago North suffered its first defeat of the season – a lopsided 34-8 loss to Rogers – but last week got back on track by handing Cumberland its first defeat 36-14.
