NK-SK battle goes to Skippers

September 28, 2013

WAKEFIELD – It played out like any good rivalry game should, where the only thing disappointing part about last Thursday’s North versus South Kingstown boys soccer matchup at Curtis Corner Middle School was the fact it is the only time it will happen in regular season.
After a defensive battle through the first half and deep into the second, the offenses for both sides came alive in the closing minutes, with North Kingstown going home with the 2-1 win.

TIVERTON—The worst thing you can give a lesser opponent is hope.
The goal for the Narragansett football team entering Saturday night’s game at a young, rebuilding Tiverton squad was to make sure it took control early on and the Mariners did just that thanks to some early fireworks from juniors Austin Butler and Deontae Stanley.
Butler returned the opening kickoff down to the Tiverton 20-yard line and Stanley punched the ball into the end zone one play later as the Mariners cruised to a 41-8 victory in their season opener.

EAST GREENWICH – It was a tough draw for a team still trying to find its rhythm as the Prout girls tennis team travelled north to face East Greenwich last Thursday. The season’s struggles continued for the banged up and undermanned Crusaders squad as they took the courts against the top-ranked Avengers and were swept, 7-0.
“We’re missing four players,” said Prout coach Steven Matzner. “I told them on the bus just to compete as hard as they could knowing that’s the best team in the state.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – League play in Division I began Friday night for the South Kingstown football team – 0-8 in 2012 – and the Rebels jumped right into the thick of the division, kicking off 2013 at home against three-time defending D-I champion Bishop Hendricken.
Though the Rebels ended a brutal 12-game losing streak by beating Division II contender West Warwick 35-27 in a non-league matchup last weekend, Hendricken took Friday night’s contest 36-14, continuing SK’s losing streak within the division.

EAST GREENWICH – There has been little doubt all season that the East Greenwich girls volleyball team is amongst the best there is in Division II. As the weeks and matches roll along, however, any doubt Narragansett is the very best is quickly dissipating.
Coming into Monday night’s match when the two teams met on the Avengers’ home court, the Mariners had handled every challenge thrown at their way this season.
