Labor board upholds fire union complaint

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Having heard testimony from legal representatives from both the town and firefighters union, the State Labor Relations Board (SLRB) ruled against North Kingstown in their fight to keep firefighters working under a three-platoon shifting system.

NK Players make last deed one for the community

NORTH KINGSTOWN — In June, four North Kingstown High School students received scholarships totaling $2,000 to pursue fine arts degrees as they head into college. The story behind those scholarships is one of dedication to the local arts by John ‘Jack’ Higby, a founding member of the North Kingstown Players theater group and long-time public school teacher.

Silver Spoon Bakery fights ovarian cancer for a friend

EAST GREENWICH—Karen Bristow had been Mary Sayles’ neighbor in Warwick for 35 years, each woman babysitting the other’s children as they grew up. On June 28, 2011, Bristow lost a good friend to ovarian cancer and, two years later, has done much to commemorate her life.

NK woman arrested for $200,000 larceny of elderly father

NORTH KINGSTOWN—A North Kingstown woman was arrested this past Friday as the subject of a Rhode Island State Police investigation into her exploitation of an elder. Barbara Flaherty, 49, of 70 Sedgefield Road was apprehended after it was discovered she had stolen over $200,000 from her 88 year-old father, who is currently residing in an assisted living center.

Soothing Rhythm

Nate Cozzolino, left, Wes Forsyth, right, and Alisha Almeida, middle, recently put forth a drumming and hoop circle performance in front of St. Luke’s Church in East Greenwich, entitled ‘Circle of Life.’
Every week for the rest of the summer, residents will have the opportunity to participate in the rhythmic experience with their own musical instruments if they choose.

Changes made to recycling program

EAST GREENWICH — Local residents are going to notice a change regarding their recycling over the next couple of months.
Joe Duarte, the director of the East Greenwich Department of Public Works announced last week a new protocol for recycle pick-ups throughout the town that will be in place sometime around September.
