Leslie Perrin named SK teacher of the year

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Leslie Perrin, a district literacy coach, was recently named South Kingstown teacher of the year.
Perrin said she grew up surrounded by teachers in her family.
“I think it’s sort of in our blood,” she said.
Many aunts and uncles in her family worked as teachers, her sister, brother and husband are teachers as well.

Former URI hoops player sentenced

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Former University of Rhode Island basketball player Jonathan Holton was sentenced to two years probation Wednesday on a charge of video voyeurism.
Washington County Superior Court Judge Melanie Thunberg also ordered Holton, 22, with a last known address of 3925 Washington Ave., Miami, Fla., to undergo mental health counseling and have no contact of the victim.

Cause of death determined in Taylor case

NARRAGANSETT – Asphyxia and blunt force injuries caused the death of Allison M. Taylor, 65, earlier this month in Narragansett, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health.
Dara Chadwick, public information officer for the Department of Health, said Wednesday that the medical examiner listed asphyxia and blunt force injuries as the causes of Taylor’s death and that no other information about her death is available.

Advocacy group rolls on despite bumpy road

COVENTRY— The Artic Mission and the Coventry Department of Human Services are in the final stages before they begin construction on their soon-to-be risk assessment center.
Although many things have changed in the previous months, such as the name of the former Pawtuxet Valley Homeless Advocacy group (PVHA), the focus of this group remains the same.

Citizens Taskforce endorses candidates

COVENTRY – The Central Coventry Task Force for Fire Protection met last Wednesday to endorse seven candidates to run for the Central Coventry Fire District (CCFD) Board of Directors and to discuss Superior Court Judge Brian Stern’s ruling on May 17 that outlines the duties of the board following the June 29 election.

NK man killed in motorcycle accident

NORTH STONINGTON, Conn.—Brandon Burns, 24, a North Kingstown native was killed this past Sunday evening after his motorcycle veered into oncoming traffic on Route 201 in North Stonington, Conn.

Town approves plan for Wickford Elementary

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Town Manager Michael Embury announced last week that the town has entered into a purchase and sales agreement with Stanley Weiss Associates, LLC to redevelop Wickford Elementary School. The building, which has been closed since 2005, has been the subject of a number of discussions over the past several years as to how it should be best utilized.
