School committee, local legislators talk funding

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The school committee and administrators met with state legislators Teresa Tanzi and Dawson Hodgson Tuesday to discuss funding options and keep current with legislation and discussion in the state house regarding education.

Superintendent Kristen Stringfellow began by presenting the three items that the group decided to focus its attention on: inclusion of group home aid in the state, PARCC assessment readiness, and transportation.

Pier schools approve bid for wireless classroom initiative

NARRAGANSETT – The Narragansett School Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to approve the bid award for the wireless classroom initiative to Whalley Computer Associates.

According to Roland Lambert, director of technology, the wireless initiative will allow for the installation of 70 new wireless access points in Narragansett schools.

Lambert also said that the new wireless system will operate at a 10 GB speed, which will be 10 times faster than what is currently in the three schools.

Council approves beach fee increases

December 23, 2013

NARRAGANSETT – The Narragansett Town Council voted Monday to increase certain beach fees for the 2014 beach season.

The council voted 4-1 with Councilor Douglas McLaughlin dissenting to increase the daily admission fee from $6 to $8 next summer.

The council also voted 4-1 to increase the North Beach Cabana leasing rate from $1,750 to $2,500, and to increase the leasing rate for the North Pavilion changing rooms from $600 to $700.

Coventry woman charged with DUI, death resulting

December 23, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Amanda L. Lyons, who is accused of driving while under the influence with death resulting and three charges of possession of a controlled substance, was arraigned in Fourth District Court on Monday.
Lyons, 27, of 63 Isle of Capri Road, Coventry, was the driver in the Nov. 23 accident on Route 1 at the South County Commons that killed John. P. Balzano, 26, of Providence.

McCann wins Sea Grant achievement award

December 23, 2013

NARRAGANSETT – Rhode Island Sea Grant Extension Director Jennifer McCann recently received an award for Outstanding Outreach Achievement from the Northeast Regional Sea Grant Consortium.

McCann, who also serves as director of U.S. Coastal Programs for the Coastal Resources Center, won the award for her work in building the capacity of practitioners locally and globally in marine spatial planning.

Rick DeVoe, director of the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium, nominated McCann for the award.
