SK fell just shy of postseason

October 20, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—Even narrowly missing out on the Division I playoffs couldn’t damper the South Kingstown girls tennis team’s spirits after the complete turnaround the Rebels made from a season ago.
South made its return to D-I last fall – finishing just 1-11 – and were expected to be in a similar situation for 2013.
South (5-7 D-I) defied those expectations though, and with two games to play were still in the mix for a playoff berth.
Unfortunately for the Rebels, they fell just shy as back-to-back 4-3 losses to Moses Brown and Barrington sealed their fate.

Coventry, South play to scoreless tie

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Two weeks ago the South Kingstown girls soccer team likely would’ve lost Tuesday night’s Division I game with Coventry by a goal.
Had Tuesday’s game been played early last week, the Oakers likely would’ve suffered defeat against the tough Rebels.
Instead, the two teams have started to develop an identity as tough-to-break-down squads which will continue to battle for 80 minutes. Both teams had chances to score – South had the most golden of the opportunities late in the first half – but the teams walked away with a point following a 0-0 draw.

Mariners cruise in playoff opener

NARRAGANSETT—The result was worth the wait for the Narragansett girls tennis team Tuesday.
The Mariners had to wait nearly 45 minutes past their estimated 3:30 p.m. start time for their Division II Quarterfinal match with Classical but needed less than an hour to dispose of the Purple 4-0 to advance to the semifinals.

Knights drops three straight to Wiz

WEST GREENWICH — For the third time in as many five-game matches, it looked like the West Warwick volleyball team was going to play well enough to come up just short of a victory over a playoff-bound team.
Three-time defending Division II champion Exeter-West Greenwich scored two straight points to earn two match points. This time, the Wizards weren’t going to let all their hard work go to waste.
The Wizards overcame a two-game deficit and then burnt off two match points before finally winning the match 15-25, 5-25, 25-22, 25-22, 16-14 on an EWG hitting error.

EWG runs league record to 4-0

WEST GREENWICH – Neither injuries, nor penalties, nor a slow start could beset the Exeter-West Greenwich High School football team as their quest for Division IV perfection continued at home last Saturday as the Knights overcame everything stacked against them with a third quarter explosion that buried Smithfield, 35-6.

Skippers pushed Coventry to limit

October 20, 2013

COVENTRY — The North Kingstown volleyball team pushed Coventry harder than any team has pushed the two-time defending state champions this season. But the Skippers, just like many of Coventry’s opponents, had no answer for senior middle Sam Higgins and junior outside hitter Jill Ward.
Ward went over, around and through North’s blocks all evening to finish with a match-high 18 kills, while Higgins used her speed and skill to record 12 kills and seven blocks.

Skippers survive first round

NORTH KINGSTOWN – It is a good time to be a member of the North Kingstown High School girls tennis program.
The JV squad wrapped up their league title last Friday. On Sunday, the Skippers top doubles team of Lucia Bolibruch and Grace Callahan captured the state’s individual title. Walking away from the school’s tennis courts on Tuesday afternoon following the Skipper ’s Division I quarterfinals match against Barrington, coach Tim O’Neill might have summed up his team’s recent run best with one simple sentence.
“The dream season continues.”
